Ok... so the car should be ready to be picked up on Sat fingers crossed. So what should i be keeping an eye out for in addition to the obvious issue of oil burning.

I was told by a Toyota mechanic that if the car eats more than a litre of oil within 700 miles then it will be eligable for a warrenty fix of the piston rings. So that is one to keep an eye on as soon as we get it.

So what else? I have read a few threads about the Sat Nav etc... whats the crack with it? Ours comes with one buit into the console below the centre air vents. I believe the older ones were set on top of the dash in a pop out thinggy.

Cheers in advance.

As far as I remember, the oil burning warranty issue was only concerned with the 1.8VVTI petrol engines around 2002-2004 time, you should have no problems with a diesel thats only a year old. Things to look out for? When you get the pads changed (as and when) make sure they put the anti squeal shims in, that was the subject of a Toyota bulletin. Mine was serviced by Non Toyota dealer (damn company trying to save money) and I have had a squeal for thousands of miles! Clutch gets heavy as the mileage mounts ( mine was changed at 80K service) and headlight output on dip beam was pretty mediocre on the early models, yours should be fine though!

Enjoy your car, depite my niggling faults its been a thoroughly great car!

Oil consumption as said above (fix is either new rings or depending on bore score then its a new short motor)

Poor starting/smoking/misfire and sometimes engine warning light (usual fix is new EGR valve/ecu relash) If its extreme carbon deposits then its head off for full decoke and new valve stem seals, also full decoke of inlet manifold.

Loud injector knock - if excessive, dealership should check injector values and if out of spec then new injectors fitted. If its within spec then you wont get new injectors.

Small oil leakages from sump, headgasket/timing chain cover.

Waterpump leaking coolant.

Gear oil leakage from Input shaft seal on 6 speed gearboxes.

Radial scoring/grooves in brake discs, caused by high % of hard material in brake pads. (fix is new discs/pads. if happens again then the discs get skimmed and new pads fitted)

These obviously wont happen to every Avensis out there but its always good to know what to look out for.

Mart.
