Rav 4-3 Wind Noise

Hi there folks, I have had my 07 Rav 4 -3 for under a year now, with 20k on the clock. From day one I have noticed a whistling noise through the drivers side front window, suggesting to me that perhaps there has been a glass replacement or an attempt to break in to the vehicle. The glass markings suggest that there has not been any glass replacement, and from what my wife says, no similar noise can be heard on the passenger side.

I have not questioned the dealer I bought the vehicle from, because it is not an issue that really causes me inconvenience, however, I would be interested to hear the comments of other good men in this forum. Good wishes to you all.

John

Hi John, can't say I've noticed any significant wind noise unless the windows not fully shut, I do get a bit of tyre noise from my Yokos on occasion more than i got with Michelins on my 4.2, also i have wind deflectors fitted which means i can leave the windows open a little without to much buffeting.

John

I haven't noticed any real wind noise on my 4.3 (although I've changed to Michelin Alpin Tour tyres recently and they are very noticeably quieter that the OE).

I often notice that I can hear something my better half can't (and, indeed, vice versa) so is it worth you travelling in the passenger seat for a while and see if you can hear anything on that side (rather than rely upon a different pair of ears, if you see what I mean)???

Unfortunately, i suffer from this too. Wind noise from the drivers window. Obviously not there all the time, depends on the direction of the wind. I keep meaning to ask the dealer about this at service time, but never remember!!

The mirrors can generate wind noise/rattling. Pop the covers out from underneath as shown here and stick them on with silicone or temporarily with blutac.

There is a mod now that the dealer will do FOC.

I can confirm that "wind noise" is often caused by the small plate under the door mirrors. I had this problem and rather than risk removing and thus possibly damaging these plates I placed a small piece of black installation tape over the joins and hey- presto no more "wind noise"

Yes, thanks anchorman. I was aware of your fix, which was another thing I was going to get round to!!

And thanks DRU2C for the confirmation.

Thanks Dru, but which joins do you actually mean. The ones I have looked at would interfere with the retracting mechanism ??

If you have a look at the link contained within Anchormans response (above) it pretty clearly identifies the location of the covers. However, rather than removing them and using a little silicon sealant (probably the best solution) I just ran some black plastic insulation tape along the forward and rear joins where the cover meets the housing. If I’m being perfectly honest I did this to see if the cover was causing the wind noise; however it solved the problem and is virtually invisible, so I left it in place and did no more.

Well it works. I attached a piece of velcro as suggested, and immediately the wind problem was cured. However, beware, whilst driving along the M4 at speed it started to peel off, and the accompanying noise was horrendous. It sounded as though a door panel was peeling off the car. As I was driving in convoy with someone, in the absence of warning lights I did not want to stop, and soon got the idea that the velcro might be the problem. So I opened the window and re attached the offending part. Be careful though, because if you try and remove the adhesive, it tends to pull away the cover.

John, where did you get the idea of VELCRO, unless i am missing something i have only seen insulation tape and/or silicone mentioned as a cure

Welcome to the club mate, as our cars are so good most of us only get to MR T for an annual service, so the fixes mentioned work, but i will mention it on my next service  Nice car mate post some pics, and a nice part of the world you live,

Well i fitted some new number plates to my car today, and gave it a wash, so i thought while ive got my bits out (could have phrased that better) I'll do my mirror covers, followed Anchs instructions to get the little plate off, only to find the only silicone i have is white, so i found an old tin of black Dum Dum, offered the plate back up popped it on only to find its looser than it was originally, Ive managed to bend one of the little plastic legs on the back of the plate, so cleaned off the dum dum straightened the little leg and put 3 little dots of sillycone (white) on the back, now got white sillycoon on hands,

door, and mirror, cleaned it all off, reached for the super glue but chickened out at the last minute, so ive re-fitted my little cover, its now looser than it was (there wasn't actually anything wrong with it) and will be re-quiring a new cover which those nice people at Lindop can fit on its next service

Good job i am a Guru :lol::lol::lol: and know what i'm do'ing ...

P.S. I blame Anchorman for not supplying those members who are mentally retarded, with instructions for re-fitting the cover :D :D :D

LOCAL HERO

Well mate I ahd just started a 300 mile jpurney to Portsmouth, and I thought 'sod it I have forgotten to do that little job' . So I had a search through the car and just found a piece of velcro; and actually this is probably more secure than ordinariry tape.

out of interest, have we got a list of Recall Notices for the various RAV4 models anywhere?

I have seen quite a few posts on Recalls (recall may be too strong a word for them really?) on the RAV4.3 and one or two for the RAV4.1, but do not remember any for the RAV4.2 - was the 4.2 model that sorted it never had any?
