Tank Capacity

Has anyone actually managed to get more than 48 litres in their Verso ???? I can never get more than 48, if that. If I put 55 in then i'd be a fire hazard with diesel all over my trousers. I am sure the OFT would have something to say about mis-leading stats. In my job I would be fired by about three regulators for a bare faced lie. Maybe there is a dead dog in my tank...I cant think of any other reason - where is my extra 7 litres. Explains why the mileage per tank is way of my old superb seat...

I suspect you have not run the car until it runs out of fuel and have been filling up when the miles left and fuel gauge indicate the tank is empty. Most manufacturers give you a little leeway with the readings. My first few thousand miles the car was giving about 400 miles from a tank. Now it has about 6,500 on the odometer I am getting closer to 500 miles from a tank and still not put 55 litres in.

I suspect if you started with an empty tank the car would take 55 litres.

cheers for the feedback. I guess i will wait and see at around 6k then. You had any issues with the brakes squeking yet ?

So far no squeaks from the brakes but I have a downward sloping driveway that I reverse into and this ensures the rear discs get used (and cleaned) on a regular basis. If most of your driving has very little reversing then you will not use the rear discs much and they will be more likely to squeak when they are used. If it is the fronts that are making the noise then how clean are the discs looking?

Brake squeaks and squeals are not a Toyota only issue. You can search for "brake squeal" in any search engine and get many hits (Yahoo gives 820,000)

Brake squeal (again, providing the pads and rotors are in good condition and the noise is not being created by pad wear indicators or badly worn pads/rotors) is simply the result of pad or rotor vibration that occurs when the pads meet the rotor surfaces. Too many owners are quick to blame a specific set of pads for a squealing problem. In some cases, a vehicle with freshly-installed pads of one brand may have a squealing noise. After installing a different-branded set of pads, the noise may disappear, resulting in quick blame on the initial brand. The result; the owner assumes the first brand is substandard, while the second brand is superior.

The noise is not dangerous as long as there is no metal-to-metal contact, the brakes are working properly and there is adequate lining thickness. But, it sure can be annoying. So, to get rid of it, you first have to figure out what is causing the brake noise.

Sometimes a loud noise or high pitch squeal occurs when the brakes are applied. Most brake squeal is produced by vibration (resonance instability) of the brake components, especially the pads and discs (known as “force-coupled excitation”.) This type of squeal should not negatively affect brake stopping performance
From here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brake_caliper#Calipers
Squeals, groans, creaks and chatters are all are noises nobody wants to hear when they apply their brakes. Whether a vehicle is brand new or one that is 10 years old with 120,000 miles on the odometer, most people today expect their brakes to be quiet and not squeal, groan or howl in protest every time the vehicle comes to a halt.

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to reply and providing some excellent links.

The discs have patches of rust on and we only picked up the car two months ago. I think some of these things can develop while the car is sitting around waiting to be sold. A lot of cars are stored by docks for ease of shipment and I think the salt air could contribute to such things.

We already had the car in for the front near-side disc inspection due to noise and that was quickly resolved. The car is in for a second replacement driver's door seal in a couple of weeks so I will ask them to inspect the front discs again. The worse thing for me is that the car scrathes so easily. Seriously, if I rub my hand on certain areas it leaves hairline scratching. i think its the water based paints they use these days.

Thanks again for your feedback.

My brake discs get rust spots on them standing overnight especially in damp weather but by the time I return from any trip they are all shiny again. Maybe you are being too light on the brake pedal. Find an empty car park or quiet no through road and try some braking going forwards and backwards, from speeds of under 20 mph, see if the discs clean up.

Since the introduction of catalytic converters manufacturers "hide" about 2 gallons (9 litres) in the tank, this is so that only if you were to be an absolute numpty  would you run out of fuel - the consequences of which would be a wrecked cat' which are usually £150+ to replace.

Of course now that more people know about this they might be tempted to push on a bit on an "empty tank" - NOT a good idea!

Hi

I have seen this on other forums about new paintwork on cars so it is not only Toyota.

The water based paints they use nowadays is only for the colour coat on two pack paint systems, the clear coat is still solvent based but they have probably messed with the ingredients and we end up with soft paint that scartches easily, I have just ordered a new 2.2 D4D SR and I'm having it in Silver Steel as this is the lightest silver they do and hopefully the scratches won't show too much...
