Major Flaw With The New Gt-r

Prior to moving over to Toyota when I bought my LC I had owned Nissan cars for 12 years. Their customer care was superb until a few years ago and then it really went downhill where they would wriggle like an eel to get out of any warranty claims :ffs:

Sadly it seems that Nissan US has gone the same way and it makes me sick to see them do this to owners of their flagship car

Now you lot will know far better than me but are Toyota any better  I seriously hope they are even though I do not anticipate any warranty claims with my car :)

Well this story is hardly Nissan's fault, the driver has been using launch control frequently and the gearbox is now wrecked, sounds like the old "Unfair Wear & Tear" to me. I can see why people think the warranty should pay out in every case, but there has to be level of fair usage IMO. Or Nissan like every other manufacturer would go broke.

Since the French (Renault) bought 51% (i think) of Nissan, thinks have gone sour. Back in 2001 i worked for Nissan and the French had just taken over, quality of parts took a nose dive in order to turn the business back to being profitable again, here's an example:

Primera Door Lock >2001 £26

Primera Door Lock <2002 MY on wards £6, taken straight from the Laguna

Provided Toyota don't go into French ownership things should be ok............

Mr CC.... I think you are totally correct where you say "but there has to be level of fair usage IMO" but surely Nissan should highlight this and give a fair but firm warning to prospective owners and make them aware what may happen in such a situation. But maybe Nissan did not foresee such a situation occuring

It is interesting where you compare the Primera part.... I bought a new Primera in 2000 and then replaced it for another new one in 2002. Although both were good cars the 2002 model did not quite have the same solid feel :( If Toyota UK ever when along the same route as Nissan UK I would be looking elsewhere

Its always a tricky area warranty on very high performance cars, most of the cars will at some point get driven in the manner they were built for and then they break! I remember Clarkson doing a full throttle start in a Ferrari and saying Ferrari wont like this, maybe this is the same for the GTR. Then i would ask why can it be done if it will damage the car??? Who knows

Yeah the Nissan's post Renault are not a patch on the pre Renault cars, however Nissan were close to going bust due to nobody buying their reliable but boring products, dammed if you do dammed if you don't  :)

BMW did a similar thing on the E46 M3's that has SMG (Sequential manual flappy paddle box) They had a launch control feature, and if you used it too many times you invalidate your warentee..

However they didn't actually break, because they wre built to do the job properly in the first place! - It was just flagged up on the diagnostics that it had been abused.

Porsche have bought a GTR and have been testing it at the 'ring... they claim that the time Nissan claimed to get is is not possible from a standard production car!

The new GTR, not just an ugly face!

That has to be false advertising. If a feature cant live upto what its supposed to do, then its pointless having it at all, Its like saying you cant use your windscreen wipers more than 5 times a day or the motors will blow :/

I've not used the launch control yet on my MR2, but it wont cost me 20k if I do break it :D

The SMG is not a good box, i think BMW rushed that one!

Where will Porsche go with their claim i wonder? :nopity: I wonder if Nissan used a slightly breathed on GTR with say 600 BHP :g::naughty::laughing:

The original SMG wasn't all that.. the SMG II fitted on the E46 was meant to be very good... once you were used to it!

Its the same hardware as the manual 6 speed (very tough),but it had hydraulic operation of the clutch and shifter run by Williams F1 software.

I went for the manual box anyway, as I feared I'd not be able to fix/afford to fix a knackered SMG system.. good thing too as a new pump fitted is £1500 a pop, and they are beginning to fail at 5 years old... Not 5 weeks like the Nissan ;)

I like the way they blip the throttle and double-declutch on downshifts in under a second!

Back to the GTR....

The ever-controversial GT-RNissan has this morning issued a lengthy statement rebuking claims by rival carmaker Porsche that its GT-R lap times of the Nurburgring were false. The Japanese manufacturer is clearly angry at accusations that it cheated and has made a thinly veiled suggestion that the people over in Stuttgart don’t know how to drive. Porsche claimed that it had acquired a US-spec GT-R but was unable to get anywhere near Nissan’s reported lap time of the ‘Ring.

Today’s press release by Nissan made its thoughts on the matter clear: ‘…we offer performance driving courses for prospective and current GT-R owners to help them get the best performance from their car. We would welcome the opportunity to help any auto manufacturer with understanding the full capabilities of the GT-R.’ Nissan also goes into great detail about how ‘production specification vehicles with production specification tyres’ have been used for all testing, including the ‘Ring attempt.

‘For the April 2008 test [the 7.29 lap time], the GT-R carried an additional 50kg of weight due to the Marelli data recorder and video camera equipment. In addition, the test was witnessed by ‘Best Motoring’ magazine from Japan who reported the test in their July 2008 issue, which included a DVD program of the session,’ read the statement.

Nissan says it offers two tyre choices for the GT-R - Bridgestone POTENZA RE070R and Dunlop SP SPORT 600 DSST CTT - and for the tests conducted at the Nurburgring where the lap times of 7:38 and 7:29 were recorded, the Dunlop tyres were used.

Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer and Chief Product Specialist for GT-R, said: ‘We have used circuits like the Nurburgring and Sendai extensively during the development of the GT-R. The fastest lap-time was never the objective but a simple parameter for us to measure the GT-R in a consistent way against other world class supercars.

'Testing a car with specialized parts such as unique tyres or suspension has no meaning for us. The GT-R was designed from the start to be a supercar that could be driven anywhere, anytime and by anyone. For us, testing the car in standard production specification is far more relevant than creating a one-off vehicle that our customers cannot buy.
