Clutch Advise Please

Hi all. I bought a 56 reg Avensis 1.8 last December at present it has done 27000 miles. Over the last couple of months during fast acceleration (on motorways etc) the clutch slips and you have to take your foot off the accelerator and then it normally kicks in. Took it into garage today and they have said they think it needs a new clutch (at £780) and that it wont be covered in the warranty. Bit miffed as over 20 years of driving have never worn a clutch out before. Also why is the clutch not covered on the warranty.

Would appreciate any advice on this . Thanks.

Hi,

the clutch on my 55 plate Avensis T3XD4D 2.0 burnt out completely after 7600 miles! The missus was driving it at the time & I suspect she was slipping the clutch in a jam on the A1M. It was covered by warranty & didn't cost me anything, but, the same woman put 110,000 miles on a micra with similar awful clutch abuse & that clutch is still going strong! I personally think there must be a design issue here.

May be the previous owner/owners driving style might have a part to play??????? Having said that, your car has not covered many miles. Check your small print on your warranty documentation, may well have dreaded wear & tear clause. Good luck anyway.

It may be that the diaphragm spring on the clutch has cracked, has the pedal gone quite light? If this is the case, then it should be covered by warranty as it hasn't just worn out but has broken.

Another possibility is that the clutch plate has been contaminated with oil. (possible leak from gearbox input shaft seal).
