Insurance Query

Hi Peeps,

Seeing as I've fitted TTE Parts to my car i.e. the TTE Lowering Springs and TTE Backbox. Will I need to declare these mods to my insurance company? Seeing as these parts are available via the Toyota Dealer network will it not be possible to state that these were already on the car when I purchase the car as dealer fitted accessories or as part of an option pack?

Will an engineer pick these up in the event of a claim?

Anyone noticed an substantial increase in premiums after declaring these mods?

Can someone recommend a decent Insurance Company who actually know what mods are?

I haven't declared my TTE Back Box as it was on the car when i bought it and it's a Genuine Toyota part ;)

As for an insurance company try Esure my A'PEXi according to them is "a non performance enhancing modification" no increse to my premium for fitting one! :lol2:

When I declared my springs with More Th>n, they cancelled my cover with them. I tried to argue that they are available as an Optional Extra from the manufacturer but they were having none of it, so I had to go elsewhere. With regards to the exhaust, it is a stainless steel back box, and every insurance company I have declared it with have all said "is it just a stainless steel back box? That's fine then" and it adds no extra cost onto the premium.

If you want to specify mods when you quote then try confused.com as I seem to remember they have a modifications section where you can state what you have and they submit those to all the companies who will accept them.

Insurance companies' play a tricky game; it's all about identifying risk.

Where I live, many people who have modified cars are young, male, and screw the crap out of their cars every night. High risk, in other words.

In many cases, it's not whether the mods add performance, it's more that if you're the sort of person who wishes to modify your car's induction/exhaust/suspension, then that automatically puts you into the same high-risk category(rightly or wrongly). They have little room to adjust their categories for individuals, as their actuaries' calculations inevitably deal with likelihoods across thousands of people in a particular category they've defined.

*Cough*

To be on the safe side, I would disclose the springs and exhaust, but mention that they are not aftermarket modifications. Strictly speaking you need to declare ANY change to the vehicle after it left the factory. It is hard to say whether an insurance assessot would pick up on these bits, perhaps they would, perhaps they wouldn't.. for peice of mind I would declare them anyway.

Hope that helps

Be careful discussing "bending"insurance rules ! I just got my wrists slapped on here for doing that !

I've just been getting insurance sorted on a few vehicles & the best thing to do is to get several insurers numbers.

(The one's you're after are plentiful in Modified Mags or Websites.)

Ring them (They're usually freephone) & play them off each other ! I usually save hundreds doing so !

Amazingly I just got a quote for my 17 year old son for a 125 motorcycle (Brand new biker.) for £88 @ year.

(I couldn't believe it, but I got an email confirmation !) but I think that was a motorcycle only company.

Much better chance of getting a deal if you talk to someone, the odd company will say they have a "No Price Match" policy, so simply hang up.

Be careful if you don't declare anything because (As I'm sure others will also testify.) Insurance Companies will use any discrepancy for their own benefit should you try to make a claim! (Or if someone try's to claim off you!)

I went with Greenlight insurance.

At the time I was 22, 6 points, 4 years NCB, parked on a drive. Was quoted £760 FC. Sorry Sky, but your quote was over double that! Cover includes £1000 ICE, Trackday cover (small fee) and all your other usuals.

I declared all my mods regardless that some of them are TTE, Tesco put over £100 on the premium for 3mths! & Doubled the Excess from £250 to £500 :(

I went to Adrian Flux and the cost and excess came down (less than the original Tesco price) with the same policy details and all mods declared. :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I managed to get a pretty good quote from Elephant. They have a modifications sections so I just ticked the boxes for non-standard exhaust (TTE backbox) and <5cm lowered (TTE Springs lowering the car 3cm).

Good to know I've declared my main mods for insurance purposes :P
