1st&2nd Gear Change Different To 3rd, 4th And 5th

I'm about to buy 1.8 VVT-i verso (2005) on Saturday, test drove it and found that 1st&2nd gear change was different to 3rd, 4th and 5th. There seems loads more revs with 1st and 2nd gears and if not extra careful the car will lose it's smooth gear changeover. Anybody know if this is normal/abnormal?

Can you explain a bit more what you mean. Is it that the revs increase faster in the lower gears? In theory each gear will let you use most of the rev band, change up when you red line and down just before you stall.

I must admit that I also don't inderstand your question. But perhaps this helps:

I notice no diference in the gear change between 1&2 versus 3,4&5.

But what I have noticed, especially when I first bought the car and was not used to it, is that 1st gear is quite low (infact you don't need except to start from stopped or towing), and the engine picks up very quickly after a slight lag (it is an electical and not a cable throttle) meaning that you shoot up the revs quite quickly, changing into 2nd is then quite qerky. Once you have got used to this and apply the throttle more slowly (and only use 2nd once you are moving) it is not a problem.
