Gearbox Noise ?

Hello fellow Rav drivers.

I have had two previous Petrol Ravs a series 1 and a series 2 and both ex demo from the same Mr.T dealer both have been completley fault free and I have been pleased with the dealers attitude and services.

I now have a series 3. 2.2 D4D Xt4 on a 06 plate from the same dealer. having done a couple of thousand miles in it (it only had 14500 on the clock when I bought it) I have become aware of a slight rattle which I think is coming from the gearbox. With the clutch depressed the noise disapears so I suspect the First Motion Shaft Gearbox Bearing. The noise returns when the clutch is released in neutral, you can also hear the noise when driving slow, say in second or third, over that speed general ambient noise takes over. The rattle is not too bad but is enough to disturb the general peace when tootling along at slow speed. I took it back to be looked at and got a most unusual response from the dealer. They kept it two days and came back with the reply that "yes" they agree there is a transmission noise and asked "Toyota Technical" who said they have recieved other complaints about this but is nothing to worry about ! (I cant find any reference to this from other owners on this forum) The upshot was that the dealer removed the seats and carpets and have installed extra sound proofing. The noise is now hardly noticable but can this be right or am I being taken for a mug?

Sounds a bit odd to me. Noise from the gearbox? hmm lets not worry about what that is. Lets just muffle it out with some extra sound proofing. Seems a bit like putting an alarm clock in the cupboard in the hope you won't have to get up when it goes off. cos you aint goin to hear it.

I would want a full check of the gearbox or at least a good written warranty that its not going to collapse in the next twelve months or so.

I'm assuming this model also has a DMF. Would this need checking as well?

Thanks for your comments. I have a 12 months general guarantee from the dealer and the car still has manufacturer warranty untill July 09. I am hoping this will cover any problems, but still not sure wether I am being fobbed off or not. will have to closely monitor the situation.

As for the DMF I thought this problem was only affecting models up to 04 ish. (I wont sleep now, thanks)

Hi guys, if you hold your horses and wait for Anchorman he has a great explaination for this noise from a 4.3.

Something to do with having two lay shafts or whatever...............but apparantly its quite normal. In fact I

hear it from my own 4.3.

Have to agree with Dave, it is normal, and I get it too.

Anchorman will probably comment, but in the meantime, I'm sure he won't mind if I point you at this thread:

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=83081

particularly Anchorman's comments in post 17.

IMHO, in terms of "perceived" refinement and quality, the gearbox (diesel) is probably one of the worst areas on the 4.3, but that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't up to the job.

Thanks for this shcm That was a really interesting read. My gut feeling now tends to be check it out but don't panic. Sometimes a noise is just a noise. Or so it would seem.

Thankyou all for your replies, Its reassuring to get other owners quick and helpful advice. I feel better about the situation now and will go for a cruise to celebrate. Ignoring any gripes from the box.

Thanks guys for taking care while I was away and for finding a suitable post to explain it!!!

Grease Monkey

Mine sounds like a bag of pots when it is warm and idling. As you say dipping the clutch just disconnects it and stops it from rattling.

Remember it all goes quiet under load but you can't hear that while the engine is pulling!!!

You could normally cure it with thicker oil than the standard straight 75W (which is like weasel pee) but it will be impossible to get gears while the engine is cold due to the triple synchro's on the low gears.

Enjoy.
