Parking Sensors

Hi, I purchased my Rav 4 a couple of weeks ago. I felt the car needed paking sensors and decided the £300 price tag was a bit steep from Toyota. I picked up a 4 rear 2 front set on e-bay for £22 and fitted this in a couple of hours. Believe it or not they are really good, however, I found the front sensors are powered off the brake lights which creates random activation everytime you depress the brakes. To overcome this I've got myself a front parking sensor smart switch from www.parking-e.co.uk. This powers the front sensors off the reverse light maintaining power for 30 seconds after reverse has been disengaged. Brilliant little gizmo and no more random bleeps.

I'm also going to be testing out a new 'piggy back chip' on the car to see if improves petrol consumption and performance. Anyone had any experience of these?

Finally I find the RAV very 'jumpy' when it's cold (stationary - 1st gear), I thought it was crap clutch control but I'm beginning to wonder = Any thoughts?, its a pertrol 2L 13K on clock.

Anyone with any comments I'd be grateful

Be careful with the timer. If your shunting takes you to 31 seconds you could end up with some paintwork to repair. Would it be better with a switched feed?

Can you expand a bit on your description of the clutch fault?

By the way welcome to the club.

Hi

I just bought a RAV4 myself and want to install Parking Sensors (just in the back) can you give some tip with regards to the installation, i.e. where did you drill and how you put the wiring?

Pictures will be nice (if it it's no much of a trouble?)

Regards,

RavRoy

HI... I have a 2006 Rav 4, and the parking sensors have recently stopped working, any suggestions on what to look at?

I am just going to ask the same question, picked the car up yesterday and the parking sensor just bleeps continuously in reverse, not intermittent just a beeeeeepppp as though you were right up to something, any ideas or is it in to the garage already?

Check there is nothing blocking the sensors.. sometimes grit or other foreign objects can get trapped between the sensor and the casing...this has been known to cause this type of problem....

Some have an isolation switch in the boot (should be on the left side). Other than that you'll need to get at the unit which might be accessable in the right side light aperture to check the feeds.

Hi all,

OK parking sensors - Very easy to fit, however, dismantling your new Rav infront of the missus after an hour of ownership worried the ****out of her!

Firstly decide what you want rear or front and rear. You can pick up a pre-painted set of e-bay for around £25 or you can pay up to £70 , I haven't worked out the difference in quality. Removing the rear bumper is pretty easy, as it's held on with screws on the wheel arches and by the door hinge, the rest is clips. Once off drill the holes with the tool provied in the sensor kit and fit sensors. Run wires to passenger rear side and underneath you'll see 2 grommits run wires through. The sensor control box can be located on the LH side removing the vent cover , Power supply is from the reverse light. Instructions with kit are easy to follow. The switch I mentioned works really well, I recommend it. Front are easier as you can remove the towing covers, fit the sensors close by and stick your hand in the towing cover hole to feed wires through into engine bay (sounds fiddly but not difficult), wires then feed to control box in rear.

Anchorman - Re clutch problem, It's reminds me of the problem I had with my evo 8 when running on ordinary unleaded. I'm going to save up and try super unleaded in the Rav and see if it's smoother. I don't think it's clutch, I think it's more a fuel set up - I'm going to try a couple of things and see if I can sort it, I'll let you know

Hi re the gizmo switch. Just to confirm this is a switched feed working off the reversing light. Effectively when you disengage the reverse switch the front sensors are powered for 30 seconds , it then switches itself off. You need a permanent live source as well which is easy to obtain from the power socket in the rear boot on the left hand side. Fitting instructions are provided but I suggest you work it out on paper before attempting to fit it - It isn't hard until you get confused!

Its booked in with toyota next week. cleaned it and loved it and nothing. I can not take anymore of the beeping noise. Its either the most sensitive parking sensor every invented and detects things not even visible with the naked eye or its funked.

If it was Irish, it could be "f e c ked"

edit they stopped me saying %$(ed - must be an Oirish mod!

well not to drag this on forever, but the car went into and they changed the parking sensors, that didn't fix my problem, so they changed the ecg? anyway its not a toyota part it was added after, its a cobra? but they sorted it out for me, which is a good job as I would have driven back to the dealer and asked him for my old car and my money back! or something on those lines.

I am a bit hiss'd off to say the least, surley the dealer should have known it was faulty when they did the checks they are suppose to do
