Greetings all ;) , Just bought pre-owned avevsis d-4d. It came with 1 black and 1 grey key. I've been advised not to use the grey key ONLY IN AN EMERGENCY. No idea why. So I need to get a duplicate black key. Mr T charges £200 :o and local key specialist charges £140 :) for the exact same. But I was asked for a key security code. My question, Where can I find this code? and can somebody please explain why the grey key is for an emergency only? :D

When I bought mine (a second hand D-4D) a year ago I only got one black key. A new one with Mr. Toyota cost me £ 119. They did not need any security key as they logged into the system, put my reg and Voila, it popped out.

I am suprised to hear that they asked you £ 200 for the key. If Kingo sees your post he could chip in with some advice on the pricing. If you are near Wirral (at the moment I caannot see your whereabouts) you might consideer dropping thee car at Queensferry.

Cheers.

Edit: I see, you are in London and £ 200 might be the "London's" rate ;)

The grey key is the valet key - it opens the drivers door and starts the engine, but will not open the boot or glovebox.

The grey key is a sub key. The black keys are master keys. You cannot copy a grey sub key to create a master key. There is some sort of urban myth about grey keys being emergency only, it is a load of old tosh! The original idea for the grey key is for valet parking, the key starts and locks the car but it cannot be copied. Having the key number makes no difference

There are locksmiths out there that CAN make a new "Master" key for you, but it will cost you about £150 to £200 inc a new key, but your dealers only option is to change the locks and ECU which comes to over £1000  not an ideal situation for us but the only "genuine" option

Kingo

Plan B is to get a black key from eBay and change the blade over, then code it to your car. Plenty of posts on here about it. Its fidly and a bit of a bodge job to get the blade replaced, but will cost you £10 for the key and the same again for the blade.

there was a very concise post a while back - have a search.

HI again, just been told by the master key technicians @ TONY ANDREWS (muswell hill) that he can access the cars brain and and get the code that way so i'll have a replica for £140. :D
