Late For 30,000 Mi Check Compromises 36mo Bumper To Bumper?

Trying to help young friend of mine, Rav4 owner, who's freaking out because Toyota dealership is telling her she must get the 30,000 mi. checkup on time or else risk losing her bumper-to-bumper coverage if something goes wrong in between the time the 30,000 mi. shows up on her odometer and when she can afford to go in and get the 30,000 checkup done (about a 6-week delay for her to save the $$ necessary for the checkup). They're quoting her $486, and a "discount" if she schedules it on a weekend. Is this how the bumper-to-bumper works (she has to get the 30,000 checkup on time or risk compromising the warranty if something goes wrong in the meantime?) Can she go to an ASE-certified mechanic at a shop other than a Toyota dealership for the 30,000 checkup and not risk voiding anything (and maybe save some money?)

Not sure how the law stands in U.S.A. but in U.K. it is possible to get your vehicle serviced at any repair shop (Not only Toyota) as long as they use genuine Toyota parts for the repairs or servicing, without compromising the warranty.

In the UK it is called "Block exemtion regulation"....................not sure that it applies to USA though.

Like Steve says ...

Also, usually there is a bit of leeway with the schedule - typically here in UK, you can go about 1,000 miles or 1 month over the service interval without any warranty voiding problems.

If the warranty has been bought from the dealer - as opposed to coming from Toyota Inc., then there may be different rules. And I wouldn't be to shocked to hear different states have different legal rules as well!

Your friend really needs to check the small print to see what restrictions are there.

Price wise, $500 sounds a lot (to me, anyway) for a 30,000 checkup as I would have thought it would have been less then a UK service cost where we pay around $130 a hour labour charge

The service items and intervals may be different between Countries, but I paid $210 for my 30,000 service!

I had a flick through a US handbook (page 354 of the 2005 model) and found this which is very similar to ours;

"The owner may elect to use non- Toyota

supplied parts for replacement purposes

without invalidating the emission

control system warranty. However, use

of replacement parts which are not of

equivalent quality may impair the effectiveness

of the emission control systems.

You may also elect to have maintenance,

replacement, or repair of the

emission control devices and system

performed by any automotive repair establishment

or individual without invalidating

this warranty. See “Owner’s Warranty

Information Booklet” or “Owner’s

Manual Supplement” for complete warranty

information."

I don't have tha warranty book but I have read one and the wording for the whole vehicle service is similar.
