Strange Light

Whilst driving on a country road at night recently (so no street lamps), my passenger noticed that there was a small orange light in the roof console.

It shines out through a tiny hole next to the ultrasonic sensor "off" button, and appears to shine a (very dim) beam down towards the gear change when the sidelights are on.

Its just visible on the back of your hand when resting on the gear stick

My car being an auto, the gearstick has internal illumination anyway (Avensis 2.0L automatic hatchback, 2005.)

I haven't seen any information about it in the manual, does anyone know what its for, please?

Greetings. Thats a coincidence. I also noticed that last night, It bounced of my watch. I think its just to illuminate that particular area, cannot see any other reasons for it.

i think its just a courtesy light , designed to give a little more light to the gearstick and button area etc area whilst driving at night , i have it on my manual diesil avensis , if you search the forums you may find some other information ,, try the link below

Don't worry about that strange light. I've got one too. They have them on VWs (Golfs and Passats I know for sure do) too. They seem like an extra illumination feature or something along those lines.

Quite handy in fact when trying to find bluetooth earphone in the dark!
