Aerials

I know this is another subject like parcel shelves but other than those two annoying items my Rav is great.

I have busted my aerial on my garage door for the 4th time, I now need to replace with a sharks fin type.

My questions:

How easy is it using existing cable

Where can you get them for the Rav colour black.

My last question about tyres save me a fortune at Blackcircles.com so I am back.

eBay is a common source of these - I think the fittings are compatible (would not be surprised if the actual arial "lump" is self-adhesive.

A 'Bee-sting' ariel is another option you could look at - much lower profile then normal RAV4 one.

Also I believe the bottom part of the standard aerial (the fat bit) is an amplifier of sort...

The shark fin one's on eBay look cheap and rubbish....IMO ;) ;) ;) DaveM fitted a smaller bee sting tip aerial as he had the same issue as you (kept braking on garage door)

EDIT: Look at this this is the type best to use.....straight swop over, just unscrew the old one....

I would agree with the comment about cheap sharks fins looking cheap.

the Bee-sting is a neater option and is probably only very slightly higher then the roofrails

Reading this thread on aerials reminded me that the rear window wiper motor interferes with radio reception in my Rav4.3, I meant to mention it at first service - and forgot. Does anyone else suffer with this minor but irritating little quirk and, if so, how can it be cured? Does the bee sting aerial, for instance, improve quality of the signal?

Robert, there's a modified wiper motor available for this one. If you want to PM me your email address, I can let you have the details.

Cheers

Thanks everyone my aerial and it's base needs replacing I purchased one on eBay and that broke leaving no room for being able to screw another in so this time it is the base and aerial and I hope it is a fairly easy job and I do not need to take cable back to radio otherwise the CD player will do!!

Has anyone fitted a sharks fin type? or even a complete new aerial.

Hi,

Has anyone bought one of these bee sting aerials ? If so, do they work okay ? i.e. is there any reduction in reception with them being shorter ?

Thanks.

on the 4.2 model the base is connected on the roof by two bolts. there are 2 connections. the antenna wire what has a mini antenna connector and the power feed what is red and has a special connector. so if you want to exchange your antenna then you will have to cut the power connector and solder it to the new antenna. this is not very difficult to do. i don't have pictures of this, sorry.

I fitted a beesting to the existing base, cant say I've noticed any problem with reception.

Hi there,

I only recently joined the TOC as I've just bought myself a 2005 xt3 which I'm very happy with. I came across this thread last week and decided to

get onto eBay and grab myself one of those cool looking bee-sting aerials. Unfortunately, after a simple install, I had no reception whatsoever...

Wether it's my particular car, or I didn't install it properly (which I doubt), I have to conclude this wasn't that good a buy... But, on the other hand, I

only paid £2,71 including p+p for it...and it does look cool!;-)

I put on an aerial from a honda crv it just screws in to the existing fitting o n the 4.2 and is about 4'' long so it misses the up and over door.

I did the same thing and it worked fine. The 2009 model appears to have an almost identical ariel to the H***a so you could claim it as an upgrade. They are very flexible and don't seem to suffer from minor contacts with car park roofs etc. ( Parked in one in Heidelberg where the H***a one touched some pipework suspended from the roof - must have been about 1850mm high. No signs etc. Glad I wasn't walking. )

Likewise, just got one of these off eBay, and am buying another for my other car. £6 and decent quality
