What's The Standard Sound System Like...

I'm a big music lover but in no way an ICE maniac.

Apart from a new head unit, I'd like to just use the existing Speakers in the MR2 because I can't be ubikd with fitting new components. My main concern is that they're good enough though...

What are your opinions on the stock sound system?

I have a rev3 and I put a cheapish sony cd player in.

I discovered that were 2 unconnected subwoofers and one amp which are there as standard.

I think the sound is very good however Bibbs will disagree.

Saying that I listened to a Rev2's sound system and it sounded awful so maybe the Rev3 sound system was a better spec who knows

I think they are one of the better factory fit setups, 6 Speakers and a sub......

Sounds pretty good, admittedly the sub does struggle sometimes...

Hope the Rev 2 isn't that bad!

(I'm getting a Rev 2, right)?

lol

Well I know it isnt the Sony CD player as its a bog standard front loader.

The sound is sharp even at high volumes. The bass isnt the best ever but it doesnt distort and for a standard car setup its better than most Ive heard.

I have no plans to change it at all.

PS: The rev2 one I heard had the subs and amps connected too but it seemd to distort badly and the bass was mufled and horrible :(

Well it's only ever going to be background music really (the sound of internal combustion is generally preferred when in the car), so as long as it's not really thin and tinny-sounding I won't mind too much :)

Certain tracks (Hotel California being one) demand that little extra volume though ;)

Some sound bad when replaced with non factory headunits cos the people who fit the stereo don't bother with the harness adapter and cut out the factory amp, the wiring kit is about 70 quid, My jap one has been done properly and sound good.....my UK one was done poorly and sounds average...

Im not a big 'in car audio' person either. I listen to loads of music in the house on a nice surround sound kit. In the car music seems to get on my nerves a bit for some reason

I've got the Active Sound setup in my Rev 2, eight Speakers - sounds pretty good - not amazing but ok. Can't speak for the non active sound versions though.

hmm, well when i test drove my Rev 5 1998 model i was totaly dissapointed, it had the standard head unit etc. not sure on the speaker spec on a uk model of that year. but perhaps i have been spoilt audio wise with my Lexus Is200.

it all just sounded realy flat to me. not too great. thats why im planning on scrapping all the standard stuff over the summer in favour of more quality kit.

however Bibbs will disagree.

The system in mine was the active 8 speaker .. total rubbish .. I've gone down to 6 Speakers (2 subs).

tweeters in the kick pannels, 6.5" in the doors and a 10" behind each seat .. two amps, one for the components and one for the subs ..

and the sound is now passable ..

I've got to give the amps and subs back soon - will really miss them ..

i have a sony MD head unit and the sound is really good i think, if you pop the boxes open behind the seats some off you'll find a speaker in only 1 ( the basic not so great system is fitted) other will have a speaker in each box, the optional factory fit upgrade this in my opinion sounds good.

I have the two (one behind each seat)

As far as I can see there is 6 other speakers: 1 in eah door, 1 on each door on the inside of the wing mirrors and one behind each seat higher up possibly?

Id have to have another look to verify this though as Im in work at the moment.

in the mirror, the bottom of the door, in the area near the seat belt mounting point and a sub in each box ..
