Toyota Corola 1997 Engine Stalls When Temp Reaches Normal

I drive this car part time at my cottage.

The last time it was parked for a month and it started and ran ok but when it reached normal operateing temp it starts running really rough and will not idle. It will run at high rpm only.

The engine light comes on shortly afterwards.

I removed the hose going to the EGR valve and plugged it and it appears to run normal but the engine light kept coming back on.

I had it to a small local garage in the country and they scanned it and it didn't come up with a problem.

They felt it was the EGR valve.

I priced a new on and they want $350.00, I was told that they could be cleaned.

Has anyone ever done this.

Any info would be great.

maybe due to different markets and emission laws, but i've 2 E10 corolla's and neither have an EGR valve...my bets would be oxygen sensor, lambda sensor or the iCV(idle control valve)...

Thanks for the reply.

My car is a 1997 corola with a 1.6 engine and has only 80,000 KMS on it.

I did go to a dealer to purchase a EGR valve and they listed it in the parts book.

However at the cost, I thought I'd wait and see if that really was the problem.

It is dirictly relate to the engine temp sensor.

I tried to bypass the vacum valve to the EGR and that did not work at all.

It appears to be running on two cyl only , at low idle when this happens.

Thanks again!

It is all food for thought.
