What Are Upper Mounts On Coilovers

sent an email to jdm performance about their basic damper kit about their spec

they said the front goes down 50mm and the rear 40mm

then on another website you get presumably the same coilover kit, but without upper mounts! this allows the rear to go down 97mm and the front 77mm

ive ordered the jdm coilovers and my question is --- what are upper mounts and do they restrict lowering?

say i want lower than 40mm at the rear, can the upper moubnts be removed!

You dont get upper mounts with either mate just says to use the OEM ones as i did, top mounts are for camber adjustment i think on the super street kits etc
