Toyota Avensis - (clutch & Other) Problems On Toyota Avensis 2005

Less than 2 years ago I bought a low-milage 1.5-year-old Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D T3-X hatchback from a reputable dealer.

No trouble since, until last weekend when, without any warning, the clutch went. Talking to the Toyota dealer/garage that I bought it from, who took it apart, they feel that it is due to driver error - no surprise there.

I have now been informed that the clutch (apparently completely destroyed and I "should have noticed something earlier") and the flyweel need replacing at around £1400!

I've never had a clutch go before and that's with over 25 years' of driving. To add insult I was also informed that the starter also needs replacing - that would be another £700 please...

I find it hard to swallow - that car is now 3.5 year old (3 year warranty), and I would expect an £18k car to last just a little longer... The car has done just over 30k miles so far, and was always serviced at the same garage/dealership . I have had cars for many years, I always buy them nearly new (and within the manufacturer guarantee), keep them for 4 years or so, and have never, ever, had to spent a penny on them (mainly Nissans) beyond annual servicing.

I would love to know if anyone else has suffered the same or been told similar by the dealer.

I really hate to say it (particularly since I'm on my second 05 2.0 D4D Avensis), but as far as my experience goes the Avensis diesel is to be avoided at all costs; precisely because it will... cost.

I had to get a new clutch and flywheel on a 45k mile T3-S and, to be honest, I don't think the dealer changed the flywheel. Clutch felt better but the juddering and shuddering that brought my attention to the problem remained (although reduced). I had had such a terrible time with 'dealers' that I decided to trade the car for a same-year, similar miles T4. My reasoning was that I liked the car and lightning couldn't strike twice. That reasoning probably would have held true for lightning, but not the Toyota with it's legendary bullet-proof reliability.

Upshot? Well, the current car is going the same way - I've done the alignment, balancing - car shudders on the motorway when trying to maintain constant speed, clutch pedal vibrates and is generally a total dose.

After reading the posts on here for a year or so, I now don't know if it's clutch, flywheel, injectors or what - and don't have the thousands required by the 'dealers' to find out. I refer obviously to the Irish 'dealers'. If you ever want a case study in not knowing your backside from your elbow and caring even less who knows it, visit a Dublin Toyota dealer with a misbehaving Avensis diesel.

If you don't have plenty of time and cash, my advice would be to cut your losses and get rid...

  • 2 weeks later...

Had the same problem hapen to me this week on my 2.0 D4D T4 Avensis (2004). Accelarator was sticking at 3000 rpm in 4th & 5th Gear.

Then all of a sudden clutch just died on me. Went to dealer. Flywheel and Clutch competely gone. €2000 repair cost. Gutted.

Getting rid of asap. Car has been nothing but bother. Starter Motor packed up €600, Engine Malfunction light came on, turns out need new glow plugs at €300 (what are glow plugs?).

So much for best built cars in the world.
