Problems Changing Up To Gear 3 And In Reverse

Hi I am hoping someone can shed some light on a little problem I have that has turned into a big problem.I own a Rav4 NRG 2.0 3DR which has done about 36 thousand miles. I have recently (past 3 mths or so ) noticed that it has been hard to go in to reverse gear. More recently and more worryingly, I have had problems getting the gear changed from gear 2 up to 3. I am finding that the Gear is not engaging all the time and I have to make very exaggerated movements to ensure it goes in gear 3 and not gear 5 (which has happend alot). The gear is fine in other Gears but the few times this problem has happend I have had to break suddenly and get the gear back in gear 3 and the Gear stick feels like it is not engaged in any Gear. I have not driven the car since it has happend recently ( 2 days ago) as I am waiting to take it in for a road test and don't feel safe driving like this.

I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem and what the solution and possible cost might be. I have had suggestions that selector rods and clutch may be the problem.I have no idea as I am not mechanically minded Any suggestions, ideas? many thanks

Hi and welcome to the club.

At the bottom of your gearstick are two cables that control the gear selection. Find a good local independant garage and ask them to have a look. the fact that you are having to make exagerated gear changes suggest there is something amiss with them. They could just be loose. I don't think there is anything nasty with the gearbox or clutch.

Keep us informed.

Regards

THE CLUTCH SHOULD BE GOOD FOR 60,000 MILes + (Aw see this Caps lock button - doing ma nut in!)

As anchorman says - its more likely to be the selection mechanism which just needs tightened

Ma faither s Punto has the same problem - runs in 1st and 2nd gear and seems difficult to get any other gear but its 100% the driver!   then again he's 89!

  • 2 weeks later...

Here goes for the feedback

Took the car to Toyota for a service and they suggested I change the clutch before having a look at the gearbox changing problem????? (which will involve me booking another appointment with them) They have quoted for them to fit new clutch ..............£1092.39

They found loads of other minor problems with their visual safety report (pollen filter blocked, Battery replacing- failed drop test, drive belt worn etc)but I am still none the wiser as to why my gear change is going a miss and do not want to fork out for a new clutch (and that might not be the problem). Gonna book an appointment with another garage and take it from there....

oh my goodness (translated for a family website)

A RAV4 clutch will cost that at a dealer (top end price) but less than £500 at a Jap specialist. Total joke. I'd mine replaced with a competition clutch for less than £400

Find someone else!!

I doubt very much that a new clutch will affect vague selection of gears - it is to do with the gear linkage or at worst the gearbox. You can change the pollen filter yourself in minutes so take it to a decent local garage and let them look at the other items.

I know how to translate bothy's comment and I agree!
