Timing Belt Change?

Hello one and all,

Asking if anyone can tell me at what point does the timing belt need to be changed on my Avensis (1.8petrol T3-X auto - 2004 Reg) - current mileage 49,000miles. And is it belt or chain?!

I have a service plan with MR T and wonder if this belt change would be part of a its regular service - i.e if at 50,000miles, will they do it as standard or will it be a cost i will have to bear on top of the service fee.

If this is an extra, i would also love to know if any members out there can recommend an independent Toyota specialist garage in the West London area that i can get work done at, in the hope that their labour charges will be less than MR T. I am right by Heathrow, so am pretty flexible on where to travel to!

Many thanks in advance to you all!

Mike

The 1.8's VVTi's are Chain Driven, it'll probably need a new engine before a new chain.

Hi

Just bought a W reg 1.8gs with 160,000!! on the clock. Now i've been told i need to change the tiimng belt and i need a full timing belt kit with tensionrs and springs and all! I've looked around and found timing belt kits ranging from £40 (generic kits) to £120 (toyota kit). What do i do? Has anyone changed a timing belt using a generic kit if so are they as good as the toyota one's and if so which kit should i go for? Because even tho alot of these kits state they can be used for a avensis some of the parts tensioners look different and as i can't see what the old tensioners look like i have no idea which is the correct generic kit.

So if anyone could advise me which way to go on this i'd be greatful. Plus there's a bit of a squeal when i'm just moving off is this the timing belt on the way out.

Thanks in advance
