Question About Corolla 1.4 Vvti 16v (2001)

Hi all,

I just bougth a corolla. I am concerned about one thing only. It accelerates a bit slowly.

Now, I know it is 1.4 VVTi 16v and it might not be that fast, but still, I just dot know what to expect.

I have driven it for 50 miles only. Didnt have the chance to drive it on the motorway, but it seems to me that I wasnt able to make more that 55-60 mph with pedal to the metal and in 5th gear.

I think it should be a bit more responsive.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

How quickly are you moving through the gears? i.e. at what revs do you change up? Is it revving high but not actually accelerating?

I am changing gears at about 3000 rpm. It is not revving, it just doesnt go over 60 mph at 5th gear and it is not increasing RPMs either in 5th. I tested it only in town so it is a bit non conclusive, but it seems a bit laggish.

Any more ideas welcome.

frankly speaking it is a underpowered engine, try keeping on 4th gear until 70, 5th gear is really weak... this is about the poor torque

my shift pattern from 1st-3rd is

1st->2nd ~2500

2nd->3rd ~3000

but i am doubt that your clutch might have been worn out

When was it last serviced?

My advice :

New plugs &

New Air filter

and an old change.

and an old change.

An oil change might be butter :P ;) :lol:

Make sure that the oil is the correct grade for the engine

Tha last oil change was 9000 miles ago. I dont know if something else was done. It has partial service history.

What are the plugs? I am still new to english term for car parts :) Do you mean spark plugs?

I will take it to a garage to have it diagnosed.

Definetely I am changing the air filter and oil + oil filter. That is a must do for a new "old" car. ;)

Any suggestions for a good garage for Toyota diagnostics and resonable prices?

Thanks.

Actually I was pointed by other forum to check the MAF sensor and clean it. Where is it located and could it be done by me, is it a DIY job. Does it require special tools?

So I have a list of thing I should do as first resort:

Check/clean MAF sensor

Check/clean/change the spark plugs

Check/clean/change air filter

Change oil/oil filter

Am I missing something? Or other suggestions.

Thanks
