Import Rav4 From Canada

I'm currently living in Canada and have 2008 Toyota RAV4 2.4 litres, nice car - very happy with it. My contract finishes up in about 18 months or so and I was thinking of shipping it back.

Has anyone any experience of doing something like this? Its easy enough to get a company to ship it, its the bureaucracy in the UK - this superMoT that imports have to go through, possibly switching speedometer, lights etc etc that worries me. i.e is it worth it?

Does anyone know of a Toyota dealership that could give me a "quote"?

thanks....richard

a car that new shouldn't have a big problem.Jap cars are imported all the time - especially Toyotas. If you need parts, you can either get them from Parts-King here or from a scrappy. And you'll be the talk of the town wi a big engined RAV!!

The only thing is about the left hand drive - if it is. Then again, theres a lot of left-handed drivers here in the UK! :D

Thanks, oddly enough its a small engined suv here... I'm pretty sure there is some super- MoT that foreign cars have to go through when they go to the UK- changing the lights, probably some emissions stuff etc, the speedo is in km/h not mph and just wondered whether this all mounted up to some hefty bill etc that would negate the savings on just selling it here and buying another in the UK. Someone out there must have been through the same loop.

Its a nice car though, bit heavy on the "gas" but its only 40p a litre here. Sure you're right re the parts, its all got to be standard stuff.

thanks Richard

I would check the costs of bringing it in to the UK, doing all the conversions and how much you could sell the car for in Canada. THEN compare that against price of a new RAV4 in this country.

a year ago or maybe even 6 months ago, the difference would be significant, but with brand-new Car prices in freefall, it is worth checking before you decide one way or other.

Try this link here, to the Government website.

Should tell you all you need to know.

looked at that at 3.30am this morning as is my want - from what info there is, the only change I guess would be the headlight lens - the rest of the car should conform to Euro standards easily.

Well thanks to you all for your advice... nd that link is very handy. I'll bide my time and mull it over, its a bit of a crystal ball thing seeing what the relative costs will be 18 months or so hence... its about 2 or 3 grand to ship it, maybe I'll drive it over to Halifax and stick it on a ro-ro ship which is cheaper. Its looking here like prices of cars are going through the floor too. Hrd times are a comin'... thnkfully its not a ford or chevvy as they are heading towards worthless.best R

hello RICHARD

normally you can check with several forwardiing companies that do export to the UK + compare all their prices as for shipment. It's understood you'll chose the cheappest one. I do not think you'll face to problems. You'd also check with transit time. Be noted -- each forwarding company in Canada has own agent in the UK ports, so in case you ve chosen the one forwarding company -- then you/your representatiive would be contacted upon arrival of the carrier (right in the UK). It's understood once all containers discharged the forwarding company agent will contact the consignee in the UK. In case you wonna deal with dealership to export the same car -- i presume you have to have good relationships with one of them, because I deem it's not interrested for them :)

I deem the best way is the first where you can chose the cheapperst freight prices because you pay money.

cheers/Igor
