My 2001 2.4 petrol petrol Previa has just failed its MOT on "Handbrake efficiency" on the off side only.

Does anyone know the likely cause or have a description of how the parking brake works on this model?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated as I need to do the job myself, can't afford to take it to a garage.

Thank you.

Thank you.

You have 3 cables on any handbrake system, one from the handle and then from a branch point one to each wheel. Could be your one side is excessively stretched or you have a worn disc/pads on that side or have a leaking caliper that is allowing brake fluid onto the disc. Only way to know for certain is to take the wheel off and take a look. ALL that is required to fix any problem on any car is 50% logic, 30% knowledge and 20% tenacity.

Good luck.

As above, there are three cables, you need to be sure a cable is not seized, secondly check the pivots where the cable joins the lever to the shoes, these can stick/seize, thirdly, remove the rear discs, the Previa has handbrake shoes INSIDE the rear disc, over time you can get a build up of muck and grime which will make the shoe stick, often wearing out one of the shoes. None of the above are difficult, but as always, take advice if you are unsure and work safely
