Tyres

Hi guys,

I am coming up to changing my 4 tyres at 38000 miles. I am not keen on replacing the Bridgestones turanza again, I would really appreciate if anyone has changed their tyres what they changed them to. Also are you happy with your choice or do you wish you had stuck with the Bridgestones. I have hopped over to the american prius site but it seems to me they have different names for tyres that we do not have in this country.

I did short list goodyear hydragrips but I was told by them that they are deleting them.

Thanks,

Stompe

There was a chap on these forums who fitted Michelin tyres to his Prius and he found his fuel consumption increased.

I asked the local dealer about this and he said it is best to stick to the recommended tyres which are Bridgestone.

I would be careful if you are thinking of changing from Bridgestone tyres.

Hi guys,

Decided to bite the bullet and change my tyres for Michelin Energy Savers. I got a great deal from Costcos - 4 tyres for £296. The care they took surprised me because they hand torque wrenched the wheel nuts to the correct spec and they do not use air no more they use Nitrogen. More stable (unlike air that has water in) and you do not need to check the air pressures as much. If you do need any more pressure in tyres no problem you can go back to Costcos and they will do it free of charge. I will try and let you know about the mileage hit but in winter a bit difficult with the use of more electrics.

Hi Stompe,

I have always liked michelin tyres. Let us know what your MPG is when the tyres are run in.

What is the ride like? Is it quieter and smoother?

Cheers Chris.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have now done approximately 250 miles on my Michelin energy tyres and what I have noticed is that the rolling resistance seems better on the Michelins, i.e. the car seems to roll more. On a motorway the car used to drift with the wind but it does not seem to happen nowhere near as much as it did with my bridgestones turanzas (which I never really liked). The ride seems to be softer and smoother with less tyre noise. Also on some occasions, like jonfb said, the traction control kicked in because the wheels lost grip but there seems to be a marked improvement on that. The grip in the wet seems to be better with the Michelins as the turanzas did not seem very sure footed in the wet to me.

Honest answer - hard to tell as I start the car first thing in the morning to defrost/demist for 10 minutes and I have the air con on all the time but the fuel computer is saying 43.7. I always find in the winter the fuel consumption takes a hit due to the demand of heated rear screen, headlights, etc.
