T180 Run Flats

Spoke to my local dealer yesterday to book my Rav in for a service, and due to the saga that I have endured(enjoyed??), he happened to mention that there are no tyres currently in the UK. There will be a BIG delivery due by the end of this month.

Suffice to say, DON'T get a puncture, or worse, before the end of the month.

Comments and/or refute of the story welcome.

tends to confirm what my tyre dealer said a couple of months ago - that run flats go out of stock for periods. At that time it was BMWs affected.

Well, I am sure there are plenty of T180s and SR180s hanging around with no buyers they can pilfer them from ;)

I can add more anecdotal evidence to that of the learned Scottish 3 door gentleman.

Got a puncture last Friday night. First one in about 90K+ miles driving. Luckily spotted it outside on the drive and it was easily fixable first thing Saturday morning. Of course, I'm not on RFTs.

Anyway, I couldn't help bringing up the subject of RFTs with the fitters while it was being fixed. Same old story - they are a **** to fit, they don't have the proper kit and tyres are not always available.

They told me about a Merc owner that came in who alledgedly had to wait three months for a new RFT. Don't know if that was the support ring type or not. Admittedly they did offer to try to kit him out with a set of non-RFT alternatives which is what they said they would have had done themselves in that position.

Can't believe anybody would put up with a 3 month wait. Maybe it's a bit of a yarn, but have to take what they said at face value.

Having had a good look around the Mercedes website (I'm bored and on nights  ), I can find no evidence of any present Mercedes model using Run Flat tyres.

The vast majority (including most of the big engined AMG range) use a space saver spare wheels. Those AMG models and the SLR McLaren that do not have room for a large enough space saver, use tyre sealent instead.

There is an interesting article in this weeks Autoexpress about spacesaver tyres - they generally get a pretty bad review, admittedly partly to do with the way some people abuse them.

Also a brief comparison with a sealent - ContiSeal - which sounds really good.

And because it is a coating on the inside, rather then a sealent you spray in, a TPMS internal sensor could work with it.

Although you are still not protected against sidewall damage, I reckon this sounds as good a solution as I have seen without an actual spare wheel - especially as they say this coating in no way prevents permanent repairs to the type

Hoovie, I heard that no tyre sealant will prevent permenant repairs, if clean out properly. And if you think about it, it makes sense, as it's just a liquid. However, I think that the tyre fitters do not want to spend time cleaning it out properly, so do not want to touch a tyre with it in. Don't know how much of that is true. It's just what I've read on my travels on the 'net

That's correct. They don't/never have offered run flats.

I think that the Toyota run flat system was designed and is being run by a politician.

Usually they make *****-ups like this and then ignore all sensible pleadings.

Fair enough Fuj, that "evidence" of mine is worth diddleysquat then.

Any idea what the "MOE" is here then:

http://www4.mercedes-benz.com/e/cars/cls/b...50E.html#N27B9C

says "run flat characteristics"

Probably not UK spec.

Maybe the chap was German and couldn't get home for 3 months  More likely it was just a load of ****

Interesting :g:

Not UK spec.

This is the page for the UK spec CLS's standard equip : Here.

This states "Space-saver spare wheel (steel with wheel bolts)" across the range, including the CLS 63 AMG

By the way sorry I couldn't word the first post better, at that time of the morning it's hard enough just thinking straight

I Quote "No spare tyre means you have more room in your trunk" Hmmm so having to wait all that time or longer to get a replacement (in the case of the Toyota T/SR 180) means I can fit more luggage in my boot... ;) ;) ;) ;)

I prefer the the knowledge I could continue my journey having changed the tyre for the spare I had....
