Gearbox Woes - 1.8gs

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

My P reg. 1.8GS, with 120k miles on the clock, fails to engage reverse and is difficult to get in to forward gears. The clutch seems to be okay, although the release bearing is noisy, so I have come to the conclusion that some part of the gearbox is at fault. Obviously, the car is worth very little (in fact I replaced it with the same model/year/colour/spec but with 1/3rd mileage) so not worth spending too much money on but too good to scrap and I want the experience of rebuilding a gearbox. So, my question is.............

Has anyone stripped and repaired the manual gearbox on a 1.8GS? If so, I would appreciate a few pointers, like how difficult it was to do and to obtain components, where to find an exploded diagram of the box and any tips to help make the job go smoothly.

Cheers

Sounds like the clutch is not disengaging completely.

There could be some adjustment or possibly something loose or a bent bracket or lever at the pedal or clutch end. Not unheard of for parts to come away from the firewall.
