Here in the U.S., the Honda CR-V took the honors as the best selling small Sport-Utility Vehicle last year with about 220,000 sold The 4.3 RAV4 is very popular compared to the 4.2, but still trailed at 173,000.

There are many choices in this segment in the U.S.

Honda CR-V

Honda Element

Hyundai Tuscon

Jeep Compass

Jeep Liberty

Jeep Patriot

Jeep Wrangler

Kia Sportage

Land RoverLR2

I am more than happy with my Rav 4-3 diesel. I have also owned a 4-2, and also liked that vehicle. Of the vehicles listed above, I doubt if there are any that can compare with the fuel economy of the Toyota. However, servicing costs are not cheap and come at 10,000 mile intervals. I know the intermediate 10k service is little more than an oil change, but even that comes in at around £130. A Citroen C2 that I recently owned from new only had services at 2 year or 20,000 mile intervals. Adding that fact to 70 m.p.g. really made running costs minimal.

The fact is the Honka C..............    (cant bring myself to say it) is a dam ugly vehicle..Small children and those of a nervous disposition stay clear of it....and we ban that word on here :bann::ph34r:   The best selling I believe in the UK is the Nissan 'what's it's name' no one can say ;) and the Freelander (or nedflander) or if you like standing around at the side of the road when it breaks down...the small SUV market here is getting crowded now with other manufactures bringing out Soft Roaders...Renault Kudos, Ford Kuga (like this one) Mitsubishi Outlander (Very Good) Peugeot 4007 (ugly face like above vehicle  ) BMW X3 if you like paying a lot of money.....Kia and Hyundai models who share the same DNA....

Short answer........Yes, they are popular.

I don't know the figures but a "head" count on the roads says, yes!

And there is a small chance that they might become more popular has people down-size out of Super-large SUV's (RR Sports etc), depending on the depth of the economic crisis - but they might by-pass SUV's altogether and buy "fashion" super-minis, like the BMW Mini, Fiat 500, Renault Twingo etc., instead.

The Qashqai, known by the more pronounceable name Nissan Rogue in the U S of A

Cracks me up every time so I had to share this:

in some European languages : "Kuga" = Bubonic Plague (lat. [Yersinia] Pestis)

You couldn't make this stuff up.

Still not as bad as the "pajero", "no-va"'s of the world... or my alltime favourite silly car name : "Mazda Bongo Friendee" :)
