I ran out our of diesel today on my way to work and filled it back up with 5 litres to finish my journey but the malfunction indicator lamp is displaying still (the engine symbol) Is there some software I can download to fix this myself via my own laptop?

You could try resetting the ECU and see if that clears it, disconnect the negative Battery terminal for 15 mins.

NOTE: Disconecting Battery trick only works with 1st gen 'OBD' systems - e.g. some pre 2001 (although not all!)
