I have to agree with people that compare the current Aygo with the original mini. It feels like the real replacement to the mini rather than the German thing.

All we need now is for Toyota to build a 1275 GT version.....

Nah, 1430cc with straight cut box would be more fun. I'd even go back to a manual box for that.

Beam back axle and spaceframe chassis . That was my last Mini.

You get what you pay for!.....I love my car and have had more than my fair share of warranty visists to Mr T. The no-memory on the front seats drives me mad, I've still got a funky, economical and eco car that can manage a longer trip for three people if required and my weeks shop.

Welcome to the real world.

I really rate my wife's Aygo, it is brilliant for what it is meant to be - a cheap means of transport for urban use.

Yep, even with city driving I've never dropped below 60mpg. Has to be mentioned that the service intervals are long and it has been designed to survive a 10mph bump with minimal damage(hence group 1 insurance )

Not to say that anybody is right or wrong on this thread, each to their own, but I have owned an original 1-litre Yaris GS and an Aygo so I feel I can comment on suggestions that the Yaris was better :D

The Yaris was about the spec level of an Aygo+ for more money (about £7500 in 2003 money, compared to a similar amount in 2007 money). It had more interior panels, so no bare metal, but they didn't really think the 3-door version out very well as the trim started to peel off on the B-pillar with people snagging it getting in and out of the back seat. This has been hugely tidied up in the Aygo.

The engine in the Aygo is *much* better than the four-pot in the original Yaris. It is more efficient and economical, lighter and has more grunt, even though the max power and torque seem about the same. As a result it can drive a longer gearbox and the weight distribution is better.

The Aygo chassis is much better than the original Yaris, which was a bit understeery. It has better damping and handles better, even getting the back end out if you are not careful.

The Aygo also has ABS, which my Yaris did not.

So Toyota have cut costs on the interior, boot-strings etc. but spent money on the chassis and engine instead. That is why I bought it :D

Paul.

I agree and to add to Pauls comments, as also a previous owner of a Yaris, there is obviously a very good reason as to why I "downgraded"

I just feel the Aygo has more character... yeah my Yaris had a bigger engine and a few more mod cons but the Aygo just has this cheeky little presence that my Yaris never had. I always knew I'd sell my Yaris, I actually never want to sell my Aygo. I have a lot of love for this little car!

I bought it full aware I was getting "less" but I actually got more - I'm saving money for a start, albeit a little bit... the ride is a lot firmer and the car, even with a smaller engine, feels sportier than my Yaris ever did - it handles better round corners (the Mk1 Yaris suffering hellishly from bodyroll) and the engine is loud but has this lovely raspy sound that tells you it's a little mean machine...

And everyone, I mean everyone absolutely loves it! My sister loves it, my brother loves it, my parents love it, my friends love it, my boyfriend loves it.... opinions were mixed on my Yaris as it was seen as a bit of an "old biddy car" as one of my friends put it, the Aygo is seen as young and fresh and funky! Advertising it on T4 on a weekend helps!

Yes its got no insulation, but that's less weight! It's a lot lighter than the Yaris and it really flies!

When I suggested to the OP he might prefer a Yaris, I was basing that on the new shape MK2 Yaris rather than the Mk1. The Mk2 is bigger, with a more luxurious trim, more insulation and more gadgets. Might be more up his street and it comes with the same 1.0 3 cylinder engine, although it struggles more due to the weight, so its swings and roundabouts

Do I miss remote radio controls - no, its not much to move you hand to change the CD track. Do I miss a sunroof? No, we live in the UK so don't get much sun anyway. Do I miss electric wing mirrors? No, because since when do you move them apart from once to set them. I don't miss the Yaris at all!

Given the choice, I'd choose the Aygo every time!

Well I went from a top of the range 'new' Celica VVTLi to an Aygo and have not regretted it for a moment!
