Some "how To " Questions For 2008 Yaris

I have just taken delivery of a Yaris TR 1.4 D-4D coloured Chilli red and so far (3 days) everything is going well.

I have several questions to ask.

1. I have some high intensity Philips bulbs that I would like to fit but this seems impossible to do without removing the headlamps. Can it be done without dismantling anything other than the headlamps??

2. I understand that one of the fuse boxes is behind the passenger glove compartment. I assume that I must remove the glove box. Is this easy to do without the chance of breaking something flimsy?

3. How difficult is it to fit fog lamps? I understand that the front bumper must be removed to get at the headlamps and that the light control stalk need replacing involving partial dismantling of the area around the steering wheel. Is the basic wiring loom in place and is it easy to dismantle the two area?

4. At night the instrument lighting seems very bright. Can it be dimmed and , if so, how?

5. The car has one of those emergency wheel and tire (note the Toyota spelling!). As it is an emergency device I will naturally be going quite slowly so how does it handle at slow speeds?

I am surprised than it would appear that nobody on this forum has fitted new headlamp bulbs, had to replace a fuse in the box behind the passenger glove box, changed the brightness of the instrument display or made any use of the emergency spare wheel.

I am not so surprised that no one has fitted after market fog lamps.

I thought this forum would have really enthusiastic Yaris owners but it seems that the only interest is in spending huge sums of money making the car look and sound like it is a real sports car.

To answer my own query about display brightness then holding down the odometer button to the right of the display, when the temperature is being displayed on the left hand side of the display, changes the display brightness from bright to dim to bright etc.

When in the "dim" mode the display is bright with the lights off and dim when they are on.

Welcome to the Toyota forum. Give people a chance.

If you're new to forums, its always best to "search" for your answers before posing a question. If people see questions posed that are asked and answered many times already, they will tend to ignore your post - so asking a question about the instrument lighting that's clearly answered in the car's manual doesn't help...

With regard to headlights, I've already swapped my indicator bulbs (to chromed ones), my sidelight bilbs (to LEDs) and my headlight bulbs to Philips Extreme Vision +80% H4s, which are absolutely marvellous - and they're chrome tipped and smaller than the standard bulbs so they look better too....

All the bulbs were simply swapped from under the bonnet by reaching around the back of the headlight assembly without the need to remove anything.

I can't comment on the fog lights, as mine has them fitted as standard.

1 - not had to change any bulbs on the new shape Yaris yet but im sure you could replace them without removing anything. They maybe difficult/fiddly to do but nothing too complex.

2 - there is a fuse/junction box located behind the glove box. You dont need to remove the glove box itself but as small plastic cover underneather the dash. There you will find the fuse box cover directly up (i see you have found this now).

3 - depending it you mean the genuine Toyota foglamp kits, they are pretty straight forward (bumper off, replace blanking plates with foglamp holders and foglamps, route loom along front panel/to battery/along bulkhead/through grommet and into car, connect loom to headlamp level switch + connector under steering column. route rest of loom to handbrake surround (where switch will be fitted) Fit relay to junction box behind glove box, refit all parts and hey presto.

This is just a very quick run through obviously for the genuine Toyota kit. The foglamps are operated by a switch next to the handbrake with this kit and not the light stalk.

4 - you can change the brightness level of the dash display yes (i see you have worked it out)

5 - the space saver should handle just fine unless you start throwing the car about at high speeds lol. Alot of drivers these days never even touch the spacesaver at all - most of them i check at service have never been out of the boot.

Mart.

I tried to change the bulbs from the rear but I found the available space behind the headlamp bulb (about 1 inch) almost too small to get a firm grip on the connecting plug and even with the help of a mirror I couldn't see how to remove the bulb clip. Fitting the plug back in place was nightmare.

I must admit the cold weather doesn't help with fiddly jobs.
