Head Unit Problem - Help

I recently added a CD changer to the double din head unit in my wifes 2004 3 dr vvti. Head unit has outside temp and computer in it. I had to manufacture cable to connect head unit to changer. Everything worked fine for a couple of weeks and then all audio functions in head unit packed up. i.e. temp still shows, computer read outs for average etc still function but radio screen is blank, will not switch on or off, no CD, no changer. the other odd thing is it will eject disc and if I feed disc in to head unit it will accept it and I can hear it playing faintly through the Speakers!? I have checked main power feed and switched power feed and they are OK. Is there a fuse in head unit I may have blown? My home made cable seems to be fine but?????? Any help appreciated.

If you made your own connection, then I bet that there is a shortage somewhere. Maybe a connection is gone? If the AVC-lan connection is gone or shorted, then this type of thing might happen.

It's hard to tell for sure, but you should disconnect the changer and see if it works then.

The problem you are getting is the same kind of problem as if you were to disconnect the original CD Changer plug from the back of the unit - the one with just 2 wires in and providing the AVC-LAN as noted above

I would do as St Thicket says, plugging that original lead back in to check all is still ok and then go from there.

Thanks guys for the input. This is tomorrows job. The wife can't bear the silence driving to work every day!

You mean she doesn't whistle along to pass the time? You could always try suggesting that you need a new car!!

I have the same year Rav and was hoping to add a cd multichanger or connect an mp3 player. Problem is I can't see a way to get the radio out or get behind it. Any advice would be most welcome. Cheers

Valium - young person (notice the equality policy operating).

The answer for all short term ills. Then someone with a little knowledge (dave.m or schm) will stumble out of their cage to reply.........deep breath ..............

If that fails, anchorman will lecture you on the joys of replenishing your gearbox oil. ( :P )

But what you really need is young Hoovie to come along and bring 2011 into your RAV! Mind you, some say he is expensive. I can't comment even tho I'm 673 miles from him/her/them/it/yerman

If you have the bezel with 4 screws visible, follow removal instructions on this link -

http://www.unclepips.co.uk/rav/radlive.htm

If you dont have screws, use an old bank card to GENTLY prise the the two silver side trims off either side of radio.

Do a little bit at a time, and move between top and bottom of trim, as in this link -

Well I am too late to reply to answer the question, but I like the name :D

:baby::baby::baby:

Good luck with the radio removal - it is all pretty logical one you get started

Well, everything works again! I had joined all pins pin to pin and although it all worked initially I eventually found that if the second TX- pin was connected the head unit would not switch on and if it was on it would not switch off????????????

Anyway by disconnecting this wire it all works. At least it turned out that the problem was not my homemade cable connection.

Just a word of warning to anyone buying a second hand CD changer. DO NOT BUY IT IF THERE IS NO CONNECTING CABLE TO THE HEAD UNIT. YOU CANNOT BUY THIS CABLE FROM TOYOTA SEPARATELY.

Cheers for all the help I got here!

Thanks for the advice, it's easy when you know how. Mine is the dash without the 4, screws, so I was a bit puzzled as to how to access without causing damage. The two silver trims ( they are handed btw ) came of fairly easily and I fitted a vtyxoo1, adapter, bought on eBay for £20. So I can now play any Ipod type player through the radio. Not ideal only an earphone jack so no screen info, but it will work with any player or phone/pda.

cheers
