Clutch/accelerate Pedal Help

hi guys,

just brought a 05reg cts and i didnt notice this on the test drive as i was checking lift etc...

anyway when im trying to drive nice and smoothly i get really bad vibrations on the clutch pedal. then once the speed builds above 30mph its also felt on the accelerate pedal.

seems like the sound is coming directly behind the pedal and a slight grinding noise can also be heard.

performance is fine and im not getting any wheels locking up etc.

any ideas what this is? help

thanks!

anyone?

im thinking unbalanced flywheel maybe?

also if i place my foot to the back of the pedal box while driving i can feel the vibrations through the chassis....

never had this issue but obviously you are struggling abit.

id go through a process of elimination starting with cheap things first

can you ensure that your pedals are literally screwed in tightly enough, previous owner could have installed new pedals and then retro fittefd the old ones when selling and now its a bit loose?

take your motor to a tyre shop, get a full wheel alignment/balancing? cost about £25

they will tell you if the front bearing or anything is gone, and let you know if it is a simple wheel problem.

do you get anything through the gearstick when shifting or accelerating/decelerating?

thank you for the reply :) yes i am a struggling...

the pedals are fine, the vibrations are being transmitted through the pedals from the back of the pedal box. ie the chassis..

ive ruled out the clutch and gearbox as even when the car is in neutral or coasting the chassis vibrates. there is no negative feedback through the steering wheel so thats why i dont think its a wheel balance or tracking problem.

this leave the drive train/suspension at fault.. the sound is defo coming from the driver side wheel area so thast why im thinking its a wheel bearing or hub problem. only thing thats putting me off repairing it is ive never heard a wheel bearing issue get so bad. it really does vibrates the pedals around 40mph and then slowly phases out.

normally wheel bearings just grind and get noisier rather than vibrate?

Where did you buy your CTS from?

If it was a dealer then you will have a warranty to fall back on, i would take it straight back ;)

Is it only when driving or will it do it if you sit still and rev the engine? Or even just let the engine idle.

If it's only when the car's actually moving it sounds like it could be as simple as an unbalanced or buckled wheel.

Try swapping the front driver's side wheel (as it seems this is where the noise is coming from) with the spare.

front wheel, CV joint may be your culprit?

do you get any dodgy noises when turning and going slowly? a quick check, stick you hand behind the brake assembley and grab the drive shaft and check for play. also run you hand over the rubber 'boot' and the hub end of the shaft, could be split if the CV joint is ko'd (its a typical sign)

obviously DONT do those checks straight after you have drive it as the brakes will be hot! lol

also IF the wheel baring is so bad as to make vibrations fully noticable, youl be able to jack the car up until the tyre leaves the ground and in turn check for play on each wheel. try pulling/pushing quite firmly in alternating planes to see if there is ANY movement. you should have none (ie, pull the top and push the bottom, or pull the left and push the right)

ricc.

thank you for the help guys!

Norfolk n Chance:

i didnt buy the car from a main dealer but from another trader. so where would i stand on this? the car does come with 3 months private warranty but has a £100 ex to claim. can i still take the car back to them? ive only had the car 10days now.

Jock Fran:

it only occurs when driving but surly a unbalanced wheel will give feedback through the steering wheel? but i'll give it a go...

ricc:

thank you, i'll give this a go when i get home.

I would take it back and have it checked over and see what they say.

If anything needs repairing i would argue that the condition existed before you bought the car and get them to waive the excess charge ;)

Trading Standards are quite useful if the trader won't play ball

Was the warranty with the garage or is it through a 3rd party? (AA Warranty etc)

Small dealers tend to buy a 3rd party warranty rather than offer their own

warranty is with VGS (Vehicle Guarantee Services ltd),

ive just spoken to them but they are saying it's a pre-existing condition and i should speak to the dealer...

VGS did say they have been providing warranties to this dealer for some time so hopefully its a really busy day to harward smee so thats why they aren't picking up the phone and also the website has crashed today!....

thanks guys... just got off the phone to the trader... i had a mobile number for them...

im surprised, i was expected a little argument but the guy said bring the car back and they will fix it. even give me a replacement car in the mean time. a huge weight has just been lifted. i really was getting worried there for a while!

they couldn't answer the phones as they were very busy and the website must have been a glitch as its working for me now...

feel a bit silly now

will let you know what the fault was and what the outcome is. thanks for the advice!

im just glad they are going to fix it. this is the most money ive ever spent on a car so was expecting it to be prefect. also it left me with a zero bank balance for any repairs.

they are a 3hr drive away so thats a bit of a bummer but at least they will fix it. wonder what car i'll get as a temp replacement.....
