Lo Y'All :yahoo:

As I am now thinking of getting Big Red some new shoes I thought I'd put this out to you fellow Ravvers...

The cheapest tyres I have managed to find are Kumho KL51 (all season tyres) in the 225/65/17 (H) these are going for £72.30 incl delivery... then my local Kwick fit guy will fit them for 15 notes per wheel... so not too bad.

So me questions to you all are.... :g:

1. Can anyone find any cheaper ones....

2. Has anyone out there actually got these fitted to their rav and if yes... let us know what you think of em... ^_^

Back to all you fellow Ravvers out there....

Regards

Rob

Kumho are a mid range tyre, very good quality and value for money, they advertise in the Champions League and I think have advertising links with Manchester UTD (but I won't hold it against them)

I have used them before and found them very good, descent mileage and good grip, I don't own a Rav but I have fitted the KL51 to a few 4x4's and have had costomers buying them again when they needed replacing... so must have been ok for them. Your price also seems to be fairly good, however 15 quid a corner for fitting seems a bit steep... should be able to get that done for 10 - 12 quid... including valve balance and VAT.

If you hold on to next week you will save 2.5% as the VAT is going down to 15%... HUGE difference eh

Yep indeed,

I will wait unitl next week.

Unfortunately 15 squid is the norm in Reading - Think as I am getting the tyres myself ie delivered from an online site - the chaps fitting them want to make a little extra...

I did knock on my local MR Ts door and they quoted me 105 per tyre fully fitted... So think I'll order them in myself at 72.30 per tyre and pay the 15 on top... still works out cheaper...

looking at blackcircles.com, they have the Michelin Latitude Tour at £94.59 each fully fitted, which is just £7 more then the Kumho - may be worth considering? I think Robert has these fitted?

Just logged on to blackcircles.com and could not see that deal... best I saw was for Bridgestone and they came in at 106 fully fitted so 212 for both... then I get a discount through who I work for and thats only a 8 squid less... so not really worth it...

As said I dont think I'll find nowt better than the £72.30 plus £15 per tyre fitting...

Will wait till Monday and see if the drop in VAT might bring the price down slightly...

Just also found that I could get a good deal on Goodyear Wrangler HP tyres... anyone had experience with these in regards to grip and wear?

I do and they are markedly quieter than my OE tyres. They are also very good in the wet and, this morning, on frosty/icy roads. I'm very happy with them.

Gutted,

I was going to go for the Wranglers but then noticed that the speed rating was T which is lower than H....

Then again does this really matter - I mean other than Botthers our residential Rocket Pilot we don't really have high performance super fast cars...

Do we really have to stick with H tyres..... ?

Do we really have to stick with H tyres..... ?

Doubt it, what is speed rating for the T's anyway ?

When it comes time to change mine, which at the present wear rate will be spring 2010! :o, I think I will go for the Michelin's. Had Michelin's on previous cars are they were really good.

To be perfectly honest the OE Bridgestones on the car at the moment are pants on greasy slippery roads.

"What does the speed rating mean?

The speed rating is marked on the side of the tyre and indicates the maximum speed at which the tyre can carry the load corresponding with its load index. Example 91V.

"T" rated tyres are designed to carry their load up to 118 MPH

"H" rated tyres are designed to carry their load up to 130MPH

"V" rated tyres are designed to carry their load no faster than 150 MPH

Tyres marked with a "W" and "Y" are designed to go faster than 150 MPH but no faster then 169 & 186 MPH respectively. The "W" & "Y" ratings usually appear with the ZR rating.

The "ZR" rating without a "W" or "Y" indicates 150 MPH.

Even if you do not drive at these speeds, the correct specification is essential in order to comply with the vehicle manufactures recommendation and your insurance policy."

Damn

Guess I'll have to stick to the 'H' rate then....

So I think I'll end up going for the Kumho KL51 which cost around the 68 squid per tyre... plus fitting of 15 per side...

Personally I wouldn't let a lower speed rating stop me from buying the tyres of my choice, especially with our cars.

High performance cars, yeah, you have to be a bit more careful, but for us.........?

Also like the look of the Pirelli Scorpion ATR (link here), which does come with a H speed rating.

Used them on the X3 and they were really good.

Not sure about the price

if you fit incorrect tyres especially lower speed rating and then you crash your insurance company will use it as a way not to pay out

I think it has to be culpable as a cause.

If the tyres are too low a load rating, then definately a bad idea. If the speed rating is only 118MPH and you have an accident driving well within the speed limits of the tyre, which you would (or at least should) be in the UK, then it should be ok

Just my opinion - don't quote me!

  • 3 weeks later...

Well !

it's all done and dusted... :)

I have gone for the General Grabbers - the UHB or was it UHP , ah sommet like that, anyway... to get me rear tyres replaced set me back £135 all in.... Bargain or What

When it comes to replace the front ones I think I'll change them also to the Grabber ones... the tyres seem quite rugged and built for purpose...

Anywho... for you fine Ravvers out there who live close to Bracknell then I recommend Bracknell Batteries and Tyres on Longshot lane... Give em a call I'm sure you'll be happy with their price.... just beware that they do get very busy... with prices like the ones I paid that doesnt suprise me... ;)

I used to work in Bracknell (Western Way) for 10 years and when I was based in that area, I always used that company, so have to agree with you, Rob.

Just saw this thread and thinking I should post up Bracknell Tyre and Battery but luckily you found them anyway! :D

They are super cheap but you have to get there really early at least half an hour before they open on a Saturday if you don't want to spend all day down there waiting in a huge queue.

I just got Grabbers all round on my RAV... £172 a pair from Black Circles. I thought that was cheap after I phoned the place that was going to fit them directly and they quoted £99 per tyre... so it sounds like you got a real bargain! Have you checked they're brand new with 8mm tread?

Not sure about the tread depth (although looks quite deep), however all the "new" tyre markings are there and there were left overs of a sticker...

Come March I recon I'll have to replace the front tyres so will be going to the same place for the same tyres... will see if this was a one off bargain or if the next ones will be just as cheap...

On speed you might find the RAV is limited to 112mph - I have.

I got a price fom Blackcircles but dropped into the place that would be the allocated fitters and they gave me a better price anyway - £80 a corner for a set of 4 all in. Really have to shop around!
