Auris T180 Oil Consumption

I notice on the Avensis forum that there are a few reports of excessive oil consumption when the 2.2D4D gets to around 20k. Mine is in next week for its 20k service with 19600 on the clock. I have noticed an increased use of oil over the last 2-3k miles. According to the Avensis thread, it's replacement piston rings which are required. Anyone had this problem on the Auris? I will keep an eye on mine post service and see how it goes. At least MrT will know they topped it up, and with how much and it'LL give a good reference point.

I've just looked over my T180 having not used it in over a week.

I know many people in here have problems with oil consumption but with 25,000 on the clock and 50% though a service interval mine has not used any oil.

It would be interesting to know OldSko01 is getting on with oil for we bought our T180s about the same time and both of us carried out a comprehensive running in period.

Scotland has been in the grip of a very cold spell but it fired up as usual fist time.

  • 2 years later...

My 58 plate Auris SR180 2.2 td d4d is drinking alot of oil. Im at 44k even though it has been well looked after & serviced all the time. I am getting told by my Toyota dealer that it is normal for the car to burn a litre of oil every 1000 miles... I think this is rubbish & i think a trip to my dealer is in order :/

what is it with toyota oil consumptin.they were supposed to sort this problem out some time ago.

some have the this issue and others dont.

i know there are inproved materials used these days and bore machineing improves running in.

but piston and rings are basicly have been the same for donkey years.2 compression rings and a scraper ring.

the scraper channels the oil to the holes in the ring grove and it drains away.

earlier problems were caused by not having enough of these holes or they were too small.

that was supposed to be sorted.but there are many cases where people are stll havng problems.

some people will tell you that modern engines are designed to burn more oil.WHY.

it should not be beyond toyota to sort this problem out.

some where i saw an official toyota statement saying its not 1000 mile per ltr before they do anything is done about it but 600 mile.dont know where i saw this, maybe it was the US market.

there they had issues with sludge build up blocking the sump filter and starving the oil pump and knocking out mains and big end bearings.one of the us states forced toyota to fix peoples cars with this problem.

but if you did not have a full sevice history as you have to here, then you have a fight on your hands to get it sorted.

Thank you for that very interesting. Yes i do have a fight as my Toyota dealer will just claim that it is normal for the car to use that much oil. I'm with you though why should it burn that much oil? I think another trip to my dealer is required...

i had 3 vw cars with a 1.6 turbo diesel engines.the hand book stated that using 1 ltr of oil per 1000 miles was acceptable by vw.though i had no problems with these engines, but as oil and filter were changed every 5000 miles (this was the service schedule) any oil consumption would have not been obvious as an oil change of say 10000 miles.

as oil change are over a greater miliage these days this fact must be taken into consideration.when comparing older engine oil consumption

You do need to establish EXACTLY how much oil it is useing. Top it up to the EXACT FULL mark, drive 1,000 miles and fill it again to the EXACT full mark. See how much you have to put in. I would get your dealer to do this for you because if it exceeds the 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles then they will be able to do something about it, if it uses LESS than 1000 miles per litre then it will be considered normal. These figures are issued by Toyota and not your dealer so no point in blaming your dealer for telling you the news

Well we have a Sept 07 T180 which has just done 40k and is in for the service Friday but what I will say is that I have never had to put any oil in the car at all between services and we have had the car now for 2 years / 25k. I will also add on this service I have requested the low ash oil Toyota recommend to help keep the EGR clear so not sure if this will change with the oil spec change.

Maybe John can advise here?
