Hi ive gt a corolla t-sport at the moment but i love off roading and drove a T-180 the other day for a course and was inpressed how well it drove ect.

but i was woundering if anyone had took there Rav's off roading before and how did they handle it?

i know that the old shape rav's are rubish at off roading :/

or am i best off sticking to my plan/choices of a Hilux vigo/L.C Amazon 4.7 V8/Range Rover 4.4v8

cheers

Lo there...

On our last holiday down at Devon Cliffs we were given a caravan right on top of the hill, there was no parking directly next to the caravan and if we would have parked in the parking bays provided then it would have been too much of a pain of a walk with both the littlens.

Soo I asked if we could park on the grass next to the caravan and was told that they did'nt mind but we would have to be carefull of not getting bogged in.(as it had been raining a lot) I mentioned I had a part-time 4x4 and this should'nt matter...

What I did'nt think of was that there was a steep bit I had to get our Rav over before getting to the caravan think it was between 45 and 55 degree angle, looked steeper in the Rav than when you stood outside... Anywho, I did get stuck on some occasions but would blame that on the tyres and the man behind the wheel...

If I could have got a decent run up to it then there would'nt have been any issues but because this was on a bend and I had to do a sharp turn to the right I couldnt build up any speed to give me a little advantage... so most times I climbed up the hill from standing and at times Big Red did struggle (on one occasion I over revved and big red blew a little smoke around (think they call it clutch burn..)) - then again she is a petrol engine and has less lowend torque than the diesel - with a diesel I dont think the issue would have been there... So I'd say if you want to go offroading then get a diesel over the Petrol...

hope that helps a little...

regards

Rob

Buy a RAV and you will not be disappointed as they are very good cars indeed

They have limitations but then what car doesn't

Yes go for a diesel, go with automatic rather than a manual, stay with a Toyota, you don't need to step up to a LC Amazon as the regular LC is very capable indeed

Don't go with a Range Rover or LR anything as you will always be fixing them

Yes the RR looks good but you need patience and a wallet to keep them going

Go with the Amazon if that is what floats your boat but simply be prepared to keep dipping into your pocket to pay the fuel bills

There is no question about the capabilities of a LR off road - there is nothing better in the world.

However, they are the most unreliable 4X4 in the world (I know one or two have owned them and liked them but statistically they are bad). The RAV is a "soft roader" and only any good for moderate off roading. I was surprised how good mine was in what little bit of snow it has seen.

They do make up for their off road shortfalls in handling and performance.

IMHO

In Oz they say that, if you want to get as far as you can into the outback, go in a Land Rover.

However, go in a Land Cruiser if you want to get back ;)

peculiar - my 2 1994 RAVs have diff lock. I have used my 3 door RAV to pull a 3 ton caravan over a football pitch and it managed fine. It comes down to tyres, method of driving, use of clutch, and revs applied. The 1st gear is so low, it allows me to get launch times on the drag strip that outruns pretty much any other car!!!!! Even Corollas!! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

why was I towing a 3 ton caravan over a football pitch?

simple!

The cricket pitch was being used!

On the range rover argument - dya see the TV at the weekend with the test showing a RR swerve at 45 mph and do a full flip and reverse roll??  Diff lock and low ratio didn't seem to help much!

Low Ratio on the Land Rovers come in very useful sometimes

Those RAMPs on the recover low-loaders can be very steep, ya know ;)

i have too mine off road and seemed to manage ok. they can do about the same as a suzuki vitari as long as you cant control the car power wise like enough when needed but not too much it can cope fine without any mods but it is all down to the tyre 3dr is best
