Cat System & Ecu Replacement On Avensis

Hello - I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice ... with my poorly Avensis T3 Tourer '03' Plate that has been regularly serviced and done approx 85K miles

I have just returned from Toyota garage this morning after engine warning light appeared on my dashboard - as it needed to be hooked up to the computer to find the fault.

£50 later (Code P0420) - I have been informed that I need a new cat and engine ECU and gaskets etc with a quotation figure for the parts, labour and VAT at £1330!!!! (ouch...)

I have been reading other posts - and not sure if there is a link in anyway - as 3 weeks ago my car had a engine fix which was done in warranty as it has been leaking/burning oil for many months - and was apparently a recognised fault with the car ..

I notice on this forum that the same problem occured with someone else - had the warranty work done and then had to have a new CAT and ECU .. do you think there is a link .... or just bad luck ....

Also should I expect to be paying this amount of money for this work and should I expect the Cat and ECU to go on this age car with the amount of miles it has done ..

Also if I don't undertake the work - what would be the outcome .....

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

Kind Regards

Pink-Gerbera

Hi

I am not sure about what you have been told, but I don't think you could buy a new Cat and ECU for the price quoted. If it was my car and the engine malfunction light is now off, I would continue to drive it and see if it comes on again.

Is it possible that burning all that oil has damaged the Cat?.

To Pink-Gerbera,

Pulling fuse or diconnecting Battery may well switch light off. But only for time being, underlying error code will still be in ECM memory & more than likely light will come on again. Your error code is for oxygen sensor & cat. Ecm may well have problem causing over fuelling thus damaging cat. I think ECM, Cat & sensor with labour will be a whole lot more than price you have.

Yes above parts can go at any milage, i no of vehicles with same problem at 20,000 miles, it's up to you if you want to keep driving as is. But if light keeps coming on, it will get on your nerves. Preventative repairs, you may well have other problems pop up which will switch MIL light on.

Regards, Beagh.
