Rumbling Alternator What Did Yours Sound Like

Hi

I've got a 05 diesel yaris. Its done 30K which is not much for an alternator. Something started to make a metalic clatter which does match the engine speed as it is reved up. The noise starts after a few seconds from cold and and is most active at low speeds. At moter way speeds its not heard.

On the diesel the alternator is on top of the engine and easily accessible. When using the old trick of listening to a stick to isolate the other noises there is definatly a clear clatter from the alternator body far more than from any other parts!!.

Does this noise corespond to any one elses exprience of bearings failure.

How much does a new alternator cost!

thanks for any replies Lauras Dad.

Laurars Dad, try taking off the drive belt and spinning the Alt' by hand. Does it still make the noise or feel rough.

If you cant tell run engine after belt removal, only for a minuite does it still make the noise.
