2.0 D4d Vs The 2.2d4d

LIke it says folks 2.0 d4d vs the 2.2d4d.

Any thoughts, opinions or experinces please.

Im looking at getting an estate and not made my mind up over engines pretty sure about spec levels and looking at 2007-08 models.

Things like the 2.2 getting 47mpg to the 49mpg is this reallistic. Anyone driven the two together? Is the extra power of the 2.2 that much usefull for overtaking/crusing along? ie the 150 bhp vs the 130bhp.

Theres not much in the prices between them so only other issue is the slight increase in insurance and if the 2.2 isnt that much better then I cant see a reason to get it. But if the 2.2 is that much better then it makes sense to get it.

As an idea most of my driving will be on the motorway prob 2/3s and then the rest, either plowing round town or some fiesty a/b roads.

And yes before anyone says go for test drive I will but want some ideas thoughts to go with,

cheers Simon

I've not driven the 2.0, but I can say that the 2.2 is a very nice engine (current woes mentioned in other thread aside). It has a reasonably strong power delivery throughout the rev range, no hot rod but certainly enough performance and excellent once over 2000rpm. When I bought new I felt the 2.2 over the 2.0 was a simple decision as at the time it was £500 more for the extra bhp plus cruise control, 2.0s did not have the latter as standard. The mpg penalty seemed small and What Car had recently published an article stating that this was one of the few engines in production that met or exceeded its official combined mpg in real world use.

Over 40k miles, I have found that it consistently returns 47-52mpg per tankful on the computer and that the computer slightly under-reads. I manually calculated mpgs for a while, they ranged from 48 to 54mpg. If you do a lot of motorway miles you should easily return similar figures, unless a lead foot is involved ;-)

Strangely, the mpg was consistently around 5-10% worse after the 20k service. I mentioned this at the 30k service and they added fuel cleaner, which returned things to normal. Since the 40k service 2 days ago there has been a serious dip which I may need to investigate. These oddities would seem to indicate that there are factors that can fairly dramatically effect the mpg, other than driving style.

I have owned both and the 2.2 is a much smoother more powerful and sophisticated engine. In my opinion there is no contest.

for reliability go for 2.0 its the best avensis model by far ,but it is lacking power , 2.2 bit more poke ,but head gasket failure is a common fault and injector problems , search the forums

You might want to consider the difference that there is in the flywheel and the timing belt or chain. I have a 2.2 and it doesn,t have the troublesome flywheel and it has a chain as opposed to the belt. Your call. Good luck with that

Both the 2.0 &2.2 engines are chain driven. Only the older 2.0 diesels were belt.

cheers gents.

Nice to hear it does what it says on the tin and my current thoughts on the car are reflected in others. Revband thanks i had guessed that it would be the nice car but its nice to hear it. means i can spend less time testing cars just by looking for the 2.2.

Irish thanks for pointing out your worries over the reliablity, hope yours gets sorted soon.

OK time to RANT ! I used to have a 2004 2.0 D4d and it was great ! Now I own a 2008 2.2 D4d and it is horrible. The gearbox is very notchy - I have had 2 main dealers look at it and they both said they are all like it. I have had 6 speed vans with smoother gearboxes! The fuel economy is much better with the 2 litre. The Sat Nav is a backward step as well, in the 2004 version the display was on top of the dashboard, in the 2008 version it is buried in the cockpit which means you have to take your eyes off the road for longer to see it ! A safety issue which has been overlooked. (My Radio / Sat Nav had to be replaced with a new one). I do have to say the 2.2 litre is much smoother and faster but on reflection I'd rather have my old one.

I have just bought a 2.0 Avensis Estate - I've had it less than a week and it replaced a Citroen C5 Estate 2.2 (136bhp). I have to say that there is a significant difference in power especially below 2000 revs. I appreciate that there is some 20 bhp difference but bearing in mind the greater size etc of the C5 I didn't expect the difference to be so marked. I find that below 2000 revs and esp in 2nd gear there is worrying lack of power on occasions, when nothing really happens for a second or two, and then it starts to increase and everythings fine once the turbo kicks in at 2000 revs. Its quite disconcerting and I wonder if its normal? Otherwise I love the quality feel of the Toyota and much prefer it to the Citroen, and its returning an average of 51+ MPG compared to 38 for the Citroen so I guess that what I lose in power (and fun) I make up for in MPG.

Cheers For the replys gents.

I went poking around MR T's at the weekend to have a look at the Avensis to double check a few things, didnt have time to have a test drive, but have decided on the few final things I was looking at.

Wild cat I see what you mean about the satnav screen in the middle of the dash, I have only drive the previous model too whihc had it up top. BUt im not a big user of sat nav so not an issue, and I remeber it gives verbal instructions if ever i need it.

Also had a chat with the father inlaw about his 2.2 avensis hes chuffed with, and the mother inlaw likes it too (albeit she dislikes the manual). And thats having had a Lexuss RX400 previous, has settle the engine/handleing issues, as I know how both them drive.

SO think im going to settle on a T3-X or TR and the 2.2 engine. Just need to find one now.

BTW how much room is there in the boot???? Massive isnt it. Totally confused the sales man at the weekend by dropping the back seats and then jumping in to see if I could laydown flat inside. Definatly big enough to sleep in, whos needs a camper van?

I find the sat nav in the middle of the dash no problem at all as it does tilt out, and as you say it does talk to you any way. :D

Beware the rear seat folding trick! If you fold the seats flat, the back of the seat digs into the seat belt buckles and will cause an ugly indentation into your leather  . Mr T does not use memory foam and I've already had the entire back of the seat replaced (under warranty) by the sealer and suggested to Toyota that they might want to do a redesign as you can't use the folded seats with any kind of weight on it without damaging the leather - mine dented with weekend luggage on it. My solution is to use a strip of closed cell foam (karrimat) to stop it but really just reduces the effect. Be wary of sleeping on it though I agree the boot is huge and certainly big enough to get 3 Border Collies in!

Mine is a 56 T180, oh, and the reply from Mr T was as the model is changing next year, highly unlikely to carry out any mod so tough !Removed!.

Cheers trev, had seen your other thread on this. Not really an issue for me, as its happened on most of the cars I have had where the seats fold down and I accept it might happen. And as I sit in the front im not overly bothered by slight dents in the rear seat.

As for the model changing next yr, Havent they have already started production on the new shape avensis in derby a few weeks ago? Im not so sure i like the new shape but then ive only seen pics might be different in the flesh.

We have had 2 new Avensis delivered this week, one tourer and one saloon. Had a quick look around them. I have seen the pics of the black T180 tourer in brochures and it looks good but im not too keen on the ones we have had delivered. Interior is nice though.

Cheers for the help gents Just to feed back on this topic:

I finally got a car this weekend just gone,(well friday). I ended up going for a 08 reg T180 tourer. Was going for a TR but the T180 was only a few quid more and in a nicer colour and the few extra toys are nice.

Only done 500 miles or so in it, but its sweet. Eats motorways/duel carriage ways for breakfast and very comfy to be in. Still quite bizzar to be able to do 30 to 70++ and not have to change out of 3rd. Also getting over 45mpg as well so not gettting the low 30's some people have complained of but still having some fun with the right foot. :D

Now all I have to do is sell a kidney or liver  so I can pay to get a towbar fitted for a bike rack.

En

enjoy your new toy Caveman_si!

A word on tow bar - I have 2.2 T-Spirit 2007, and fitted a tow bar to it, for the same reason you want - cycle rack (I use Pendel). The warning is related to the electric kit from Mr T, which I insisted on - what a mistake! you expect to get something that you need to 'add' some kind of extender cable , 2 minutes job... WRONG! with Mr T's kit you need to exract pins out of the connector, connect other pins - with confusing instructions :ffs: I have some knowledge of connectors, and it took me 3Hrs to do that - I wish I used the simple displacement kit! (much cheaper as well!). with the dispalcement kit, there is a buzzer connected with it - with Mr T - you need to dismantle some of the dashboard to install a green LED (annoying, as flashes once if nothing connected)- so - learn form other people experince (at least mine... ;) )- Avoid Mr T's kit...

Regards

Twot
