Very Hard Suspension

We have purchased a 2008 Avensis and are very disappointed in the front suspension and comfort. It feels every bump in the road and most unpleasant to travel in. Has anyone else experienced this please.

2008, i would guess the car has got few miles on it or its had one very carefull owner, i am thinking the suspension bumps you are feeling maybe a new car feeling and just stiff.

What wheel size & tyre size?? If you have 17in that may be a cause.. IMHO 17in rims give a harder ride the 16in.. etc...and indeed am thinking, when 'tis time to get new tyres, of getting steel wheels 16in in place of the 17in alloys.. Also has the advantage of making the car look less desirable to ne'er do wells.. Plus (don't believe me, look up the prices ..) the tyres are cheaper...

How did the ride in the car compare to that in the one you test-drove???

Cheers!

Yes I certainly have. I purchased a new Avensis T Spirit Auto in February this year and the ride is spine crushingly hard on local roads. I argued with the garage, that the test drive vehicle which was a manual had softer suspension, but they wouldn't have it. They said although the auto's did have different suspension this was to compensate for the additional weight of the auto box. I am still not convinced, the diesel estate I first drove definitely had softer suspension. It's well documented that the suspension set up was changed inlate 2007. The car is superb in every other way, but it looks like I will have to get rid of it in the new year and suffer the financial loss, as my back won't stand it another year. Will probably concider a Citroen C5.

One thing I did do was change the 17 inch wheels and Goodyear Tyres (awful noisy things) for 16 inch wheels and Michelin Primacy HP tyres, which made the ride much quieter but sadly did not do much to improve the ride.

Best wishes

I had a nissan qashqai got rid of it cos of hard & noisey suspension, that car also had these 17" wheels, they look good but as you say , the noise and lumpiness is unbearable! I find the avensis with 16" wheels much better , but i think when you have a new car every little noise and bump can make one paranoid, it does me! it seems every other car i drive are always much better than my own~steering, suspension, noise etc etc all better! they"re not of course, its just that I"m not responsible for the repairs, finance etc and everything that goes with vehicle ownership! A bit like having a party in someone elses house, your never going to keep worrying about stains on the carpets or someone peeing on the toilet seat!Over the years more and more ive found the other mans car is cleaner, smoother and generally better than mine! that is, untill you buy it!! then its just as bad. best wishes for 2009 , jeff.

Having considerable problems with dealer who just says yet they are a bit hard on suspension but cannot seem to comprehend it is dreadful on local roads and also as a passenger hurts my back. It seems to shake and the only way I can describe it is a plane going through turbulance for a long time. I even find that more bearable than the car effect. Yes we have 17" wheels and consider changing these for steel ones.
