I was supposed to go down & put a deposit on a new Aygo today ( Blue 3 door with the Style kit & other bits) then I spent all last night reading the forum. I was so depressed with the horror tales (leaks etc.) that I've put the deposit on a 3 door Yaris TR 1.3 (met black, extras). The best bit is that with the discounts it was as cheap as the Aygo - & it has a glove box lid & you can open the passenger window from the drivers door & you can see in the boot when it's dark & you can fit more than a bag of crisp (or a life jacket) in the boot & - & - & -. I know it's not as cute as the Aygo but I'm 6', shaved head & tattoos so I don't really do cute. Seriously, your forum really was helpful when it came to making the final decision - I wasn't 100% sure & this tipped it. I loved the shape of the Aygo but I couldn't be bothered with the agro it sounds like it gives. Saying that, I'll probably tell my daughter to buy one for herself when she passes her test. Keep up the good work.

It's a shame the horror stories put you off but I'd hazard a guess at maybe less than 2% of Aygos having those leaking problems, mines certainly been a joy for the past year with no issues whatsoever and that's the same for a lot of Aygo owners - we are definitely in the majority.

Although it's great you have chosen a good little car, it's also sad that a few negative comments have put you off what is, in my opinion, a much better little car.

All the best with your Yaris :)

Sounds like a well thought out and researched choice. I too would still recommend an Aygo to someone who needs/wants a budget runaround. For info the recent poll showed 14% of those who voted had leaks.........mine is leaking again today! You get what you pay for generally and if you're lucky (obviously not me!) you don't get the problems that can go with any vehicle.

Too bad people allways seem to shout out their horror stories, but praise seems to get muffled...

It's just like a dentist: you never hear anyone say they've had an excellent

root canal, only complaints that it hurt and the anesthetic didn't work or so...

And I can say from experience that root canals can be quite enjoyable :D

14% on a forum poll is not a good figure to go by though, considering most people will have joined purely to research or complain about negatives - you'll have more dissatisfied customers join a forum and vote in such polls than satisfied customers..

As Jan says - naturally you get more complaints than praise and this is reflected in this forum and every other car forum.

It saddens me that all the criticism, which is in the minority for the car as a whole, has made a potential owner refrain from buying. Every car manufacturer has a handful of bad apples in the orchard, it doesn't make the cars any less worth buying. More people should be positive about these little cars then maybe the next person might think differently!

My son bought his Aygo partly on the strength of the positive praise that it received on this forum.

He loves it

I love my Aygo , within 4 days I had added a passenger light switch, a delay on the courtesy light, a beesting ariel, a boot light that works when opened, exhaust tip and philips blue head and side lights.

Its fun to drive, it looks great and I have had no problems.

So all I can say is for me my little Blue is worth every penny.

When we bought our Aygo two years ago we considered the Yaris, but at over £2,000 more it was silly money.

The new Yaris had just been released so discounts were like hen's teeth.

2 years on and the Yaris prices have really softened. A broker is offering a 1.0 T3 five door for £7,100, £7,800 for a 1.3.

The price of an Aygo+ 5 door with aircon hasn't changed - almost £7,100.

If we were buying now we would probably go for a Yaris as it is a much better all round package.

Although forums do tend to have a lot more of the bad points than the good points being posted it does go to show you what the likely problems are and allow you to compare. Assuming the Yaris forum also has people equally keen to mention the faults then you can compare like for like! Having never read the Yaris forum I don't know what the comparison is like though, what's it like in comparison for number of complaints per 100 posts?

Ignoring the faults and just commenting on fit and finish, functional design etc I think the Yaris is ahead, hwoever the Aygo has more character both visually and aurally and I am enjoying driving it more than my old Yaris.

Well I'm going to say straight away that your replies have stunned me. Usually if you make this kind of posting (I run an old Jap bike) you get slagged to hell for even daring to critise their chosen love. I really appreciate the comments that you have posted & I want to thank you for contributing to the forum. I really wanted to like this car (& I still do). The problem is that I've been running a Merc E - class for the last five years & needed to swap due to a change in circumstances - I was doing 1500 miles a week, now I'm down to 120 & I can't justfy the running costs of the Merc. I still prefer the shape of the Aygo over the Yaris but it was a step too far. I take on board Raistlins' comments about fitting the extras, but when you can pay the same price for a car that already has them fitted it's a no-brainer. The biggest drawback was the 1.0L engine. The majority of my driving is motorway & it struggled on the test drive I had on identical roads. I knew that within a month the niggles would become nags & I would start to not enjoy the car. So I put head above heart & went for the Yaris. But now I've just had another fly thrown into the ointment - I've been offered the SR in black for a bit more - hmm, tempting!! But I'm also thinking that sometimes I need to tow a trailer (with said motorbike) so would the 1.4 diesel be more sensible? But occasionally I need to pick my kids (12 & 13) up from Oxford to drive them back to Nottingham so would a 5 door be more sensible? I hate having to make these sort of decisions. Think I'll go for a beer - no, can't do that - I start work at 4.30 in the morning!

Again - thanks to all of you for your positive comments. Take care all.

Interestingly I came to the Aygo from a Mercedes AMG C43 so went from 4.3 liter V8 with 300bhp down to 1 litre and 68bhp. So I know where you are coming from. The first time I drove it home on a dual carrageway I got stuck behind a lorry for 12 miles and got overtaken by a car towing a caravan because the AMG had made me forget how to plan ahead :D

If you are happy to use 3rd gear to 90mph it's fine though. I am still a champion of the supercharger conversion though because of the lack of grunt. Given this I think if you go for a diesel Yaris you will be a lot happier, especially with the extra build and bits.

I had to leave my Mercedes as well for financial reasons, the £500 for the crankshaft postion sensor and £3300 for the gearbox and torque converter did me in :(
