Minor Auris Niggles

Hi everybody, finally got a couple of problems on the Auris.

First up, are the wheel nuts. The car has done 11500 miles, and was in for a service not long ago. Today we tried to rotate the tires, to find every wheel nut is completely seized. We managed to get 1 out, which is completely rusted. When we rang the garage, they said they hadn't had the wheels off in the service, so didn't see this. It was due in next week for the steering recall, but they said to bring it in on Friday to have a look at to see if they could budge them. Is this because they might have missed greasing them when the car was new or is it just a problem?

Second problem is checking the oil. It doesn't seem like you can get an accurate measurement. When you first remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, then put it back and remove again, the whole thing is covered in oil, so you can't get a measurement. This is awkward when the oil gets topped up. Anyone else had the same problem?

Thanks

The Dip stick is a pain. I leave mine overnight then check with out wiping, seems to work.

Dont quote me but Im sure the dealer takes the wheels off at the PDI to remove the sheilds that stop the dicks rusting during storage!

Hello Adam

The wheels on my car have been on and off so many times , because the cars been back at the dealers for brake sqeal issues, all the time, the wheel nuts have no chance of seizing on .

I have not read anything on the forum before regarding this issue , so its a first for me , but all the same it should'nt happen , how long have you had the car ?

I personally would not grease the threads or the nuts , because it might be a safety issue , but it would not hurt to give them a good spray with W.D40

The issue i have had with my nuts tho  is that the nuts themselves rust, and you will find its a common problem on the Auris .

As for the dipstick , you are spot on, because i have experienced exactly as you describe , the question i would like to ask is , are we supposed to check the engine oil when hot , or when cold ?

It's genrally considered ok to place a "thin smear" of Coppa-Slip Grease on the Studs/Bolts and also where the wheel meets the hub to stop sticking.

If you start to spray WD-40 around and you get any on the brake disks or pads it's a bit of a "game over" situation. If you do go down that route.... Please be very very careful.

AN excellent point , well made Andy,

When spraying wd40 of course it would be wise to ensure that you do not get any on the discs, and your remedy i agree would be the better option .

Toyota dont use the brake disc covers you are referring to. The only time the rear wheels come off at PDI is to adjust the handbrake shoes (doesnt apply to AURIS).

The wheel nuts can be very difficult to remove afer being on for a while and the corrosion sets in, also if at PDI they didnt bother with a torque wrench and just used the airgun for speed  lol

Dipsticks are a pain sometimes.

Alright, it's just come out of the garage, and the wheel nuts are off. They definitely used WD40, and lots of it, it smelled really strong :P But they're loose now anyway. Also, they said they'd never heard of anyone with awkward dipstick problems? Oh well, I suppose it's something to get used to :P Thanks for your help guys.

Thanks Mart

Looks like i'll be giving my dealers a call , cos, on the day the work was carried out for ( brake mods and steering recall ) i drove the car there , they drove me back home in my car ( in order that they could road test the car to replicate the brake squeal , and get me home at the same time ) , they then drove the car back to the garage , did the work then delivered it back ... thats 2 round trips at my expence
