Hi there..remove the oil filler cap get the missus to spin the engine and look in the oilfiller and if the camshaft is rotating the belt is still intact, if nothing moving then the belts gone. :(

keep your fingers crossed

He could use a couple of mirrors and a bendy straw... I knew years of watching Blue Peter would pay off one day :)

if you've followed this so far, its too late!!

The 3SFE engine wots fitted in your car is an 'interference engine' - ie if the the cambelt breaks then the pistons will bounce off the valves and you will have a selection of bent valves.

You can try removing the oil cap as said, and carefully and slowly turning the engine pulley by hand with ignition off (unless you are handless)....if the camshaft turns then the belt must still be hanging about. The belt is due a change at 60,000.

If you have followe the advice earlier and the engine is now a lump of scrap metal, you can take it from me that you have no chance of any reimbursement from the muderators!!

Any other symptoms - like run out of petrol.....oil.....black ice so the wheels don't grip....

it kinda sounds as if you changed the Battery (blinkin muds got me for using sland and I have to spend 4 hours translating this???!)

then you changed the plugs

perhaps the immobiliser has activated !!!

For goodness sake don't try and turn it with the ignition until you have checked by turning the crank by hand and then gently to see if the cam is turning. If it is'nt then get yer spanner set ordered for christmas cos this will be expensive.

Happy new year.
