Well it seems my Aygo is leaking via the passenger door seal again, if anything it’s leaking even worse with the new seal the rear foot well is swimming in water. What seems to be happening is water runs around the seal and collects at on the inner side of the seal at the bottom of the door and then only really has one way to go and that’s into the car, there was a proper little rivulet of water running down the carpet this morning. I’ve taken some photos which I’ll post later, right off to phone the Toyota dealer again.... should have stuck with my 100,000+ miles Focus.

By the time I'd got to work some of the water had moved from the seal has it had stopped raining but after noticing the stream of water running down the carpet and first opening the door almost all the area within the yellow line was full of water with a little stream where it had managed to get over the lip on the inside of the seal. Well it's going back to the Toyota garage next week but seeing as replacing the seal made no difference last time I wonder what they will try next? My drive does have a little slope (but only a little) and that place is where water getting past the seal would collect.

By an odd coincidence the brother of the person I car share with has an Aygo which also has had leaking problems :o

Have a look and make sure the water isnt coming in through the bottom of the door card. The plastic membranes arent always sealed properly ;)

You could try a little smear of silicone grease along the rubber seal at this location and see if it helps keep out the water by forming a seal between the rubber and the door. Silicone grease is safe to use on rubber and is resistant to water, but don't get it on your clothes or any non-slip surfaces.

Just picked the car back up from the garage, this time they've repaired the door membrane which they said wasn't fitted correctly. Now I just need to dry the car out it's still very wet behind the passenger’s seat, I've been driving around with the heat on full and the window part open, now I've got the mats drying out in the office.

Hopefully this will be the end of the problem.

they didn't dry it out for you? My dealer dried it out and sprayed it with bacterial cleaner which is meant to prevent smell. However it didnt and started to smell, took it back and they took it for the day and replaced all the carpets

If it starts to smell or I notice any marks on the carpet it'll be going back for them to be replaced, they know the car has been wet several times due to faults repaired under warranty so hopefully it wouldn't be a problem.

Enlighten me guys.....

The windows on the rear doors.... arn't they side hinged?? If so surely the water would never get inside the door

I ask as my daughter's car is going in to have the membranes replaced as those lovely French manufacturers punched through them to install the rear Speakers

If this work does not cure her water ingress problem it will mean the seal will have to be changed

I am confused as I am not totally sure of the design of her car and how the windows are opened :(

The rear windows are hinged at the front and have a latch at the back.

So the window lays ON the seals and does NOT slide into the door.

Well, look at that - its good being right....shame no one ever listens :) :)

Thanks Jan.... this is what I thought so the water cannot get into the car from inside the doors as it can on cars with slide down windows

Surely then the water must flow around the seal from the top of the door before collecting and getting inside the car :(

I've had my door seals replaced several times and the door membrane twice...it still leaks! Any other bright ideas?

SteveL mine was leaking via the front passenger door (mines a 3dr) and collecting in the rear footwell, the first time they replaced the seal and this time sealed the membrane correctly, we'll see how things go when we next have some rain.

The interesting thing is that due to a dodgy leg from my motobike crashing days I have managed to put a 3 inch tear in the rubber seal when getting in and out and yet I still don't get water ingress into the car like a lot of people do, and that includes after spraying it down with a hose when washing it .

Well it rained last night and the car is full of water again :censor:

In fact this is the worst it's ever been the rear foot well is so wet there is water sitting above the carpet, I'm just trying to phone the dealer but they've not taken their "we are now closed" message off the phone when they are open

I'm going to give them one more go at fixing it before pursuing rejecting the car has they will have had 3 attempts at fixing it.

Update: After several attempts to phone them, getting put on hold and then them not phoning me back, I got through to the service dept and they are going to book it in with the body shop to do some water ingression tests sometime later next week. So at best I've got a car sitting with water in it for the best part of a week, it's really starting to worry me the damage and long term problems this damp is going to cause.

They should really water test it after doing the work and make sure it is water tight before handing the car back. I would pursue a new carpet/mats, rear seat if the base is damp underneath and boot carpet if its also wet.

Just wondering......

How you park your Aygo.

I know it shouldn't matter, but do the people who have leaking Aygos park in

a particular way?

With the leaky door on the high side of the car?

With the leaky door on the low side of the car?

2 wheels on a high kerb?

The car pointing steeply uphill?

The car pointing steeply downhill?

Where passing traffic can dump big loads of water on the side of the car?

I find it odd that something produced by the million

should only have this fault in a small number or cars.

Matt303 Do you park facing uphill with the nearside of the car higher than the offside?

Water might pool just where your leak is happening.

This is how the car is parked (as shown by my old Focus)

So the car is pointing up hill and there is a very slight angle making the passenger side higher but not by much, so nothing you'd expect to cause a problem.

I've been and had a look at the seal again and it looks like the water is somehow getting past the seal at the top back of the door and then running down the inside of the seal, which was exactly what was happening with the original door seal back in October.

I wouldn't say leaks are that uncommon for the Aygo, we've had enough threads on this forum about them and even the brother of the person I car share with has had leaking problems with his Aygo. I imagine that there is either a parts quality or manufacturing process defect that means bad batches of cars get made.

If the carpet is soaked, then it needs to be lifted to dry out the carpet and underside properly, otherwise the carpet will stay damp and get smelly with the possibility of corrosion underneath. Once it is properly dried, use layers of kitchen roll to catch the water as it comes in to avoid the carpet getting soaked again.

Get the silicone grease as I suggested before and coat the rubber door trim to see if it makes any difference. With the layer of kitchen roll paper on the carpet, watch it to see where it gets wet first. With water leaks, its a process of elimination. Ive been through this with my E30 BMW (remowned for leaks that soak the underside of the carpet) and it takes patience.

The problem with water leaks also is that rainwater has the habit of getting into places that water from a hose never will. So you might spray your car with a hose for a while, get ****** of as nothing is showing inside, and then after a good shower of rain, there its is.

Well that's it booked in to be looked at again on Friday, I hope it doesn’t rain too much between now and then :(

It's a bit irritating that if they collect the car they can't leave a courtesy car as it means I have to take time out of my working day to drop the car in and collect the loan car (the £1000 excess on the courtesy car insurance is a bit of a worry to).

Posted

Looks like I've got the loan Yaris for the weekend at least now, they've managed to make the car leak but can't pin point where the water is getting in.

Did you show them your photo? It leaks exactly where mine does (mine also leaks from the hinge edge!) Though interestingly I do park on a slight incline much like you (shouldn't matter though, the car should stay dry however it is parked) Toyota have a video of the leakage filmed by the garage and they also managed to replicate the leak on the drivers door, which I had never noticed. Mine has been dry now for a few months after several seal and membrane changes....carpets too. I wait in anticipation as I've been there too times to believe its fixed!

Just collected the Aygo and they couldn't make it leak, they did notice that the first time they replaced the door seal that they'd fitted the replacement upside-down so they've refitted the correct way. I just need to wait for the next batch of wet weather to come around.
