Stuck In 4 Wheel Drive - Help!

My 94, 3 litre, automatic Hilux Surf is in 4 wheel drive and when I disengage it and the green 4 wheel drive light goes off it will not move in 2 wheel drive. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong, as I don't need to be in 4WD now that the snow has melted and would love to go back to 2WD if only I could!! Thanks.
