Tacho/rev Counter Problem!

Hi ive recently had a alarm fitted to my 94 starlet gt and not for sum reason the the tacho/rev counter dosnt work! unless i rev the engines hard then when it gets to the red line stage the needle goes round to the limit and goes back to the bottom and just stops again! any ideas or surgestions??
