If yours in an older Avensis then im pretty sure they are under the dashboard/centre console on the driverside.

Newer Avensis are located behind the glove box.

I always check the pollen filter when servicing a car as it doesnt matter how many miles you do for the pollen filter to get dirty, they should be replaced when they get dirty/blocked. When they block up you will find your interior blowers will become very poor as the air cant flow through the filter as easily.

The purpose of these is to filter the air coming from outside and into the car.
