Clutch Pedal

Hi folks.

Just purchased my first rav4 xt3 d-4d, private sale. and joined your site but already have a question.

I was a mechanic over a 22 year period, but left the trade a number of years ago, never came up against this style of clutch.

I dont know if this is a normal clutch operation on this type of car or I have a fault.

The clutch has to be pressed all the way to the floor to select a gear, at first I thought the clutch required bleeding but noticed that the rod on the slave cylinder responded immediately when pressing the clutch.

Don’t get me wrong but it seems to be a decent clutch all be it you have to use full travel on the pedal.

Is this a characteristic of the car or do I have a problem

The car is an 04 reg with 37,000 vin no JtheG20V7000.....

hi well come to the forum

I find it excellent and have asked a few questions from members for piece of mind and information.

Anyway just tried my 02 D4D with 80K having read yours detail and the bitting point is not low. On mine it is towards the top of the pedal travel!

hope this helps: Lauras dad.

The 4.2 has a conventional clutch which means that it will start life with a bite point towards the floor and as it wears the bite point will move higher and higher until eventually it will slip. The pedal feel should be firm after the freeplay at the top. If it is not, it might benefit from bleeding even if it moves as you touch the pedal and if you do so the reservoir is shared with the brakes.

For anyone with a 4.3, the situation is somewhat different. The clutch pedal has a switch at the top and the bottom which are used to activate the hill ascent control. For this reason the clutch needs to maintain a fairly constant bite point somewhere in the middle and the pressure plate is very unusual with a built in constant stroke auto adjust.

No idea! I do a search and then scroll through. To recover this post, I just scrolled through your posts. I haven't started running my invision board yet so I haven't played with the behind-the-scenes software.....will do soon.

If you post the link plus at the end the post number after "&st", it will open at the post AFTER the number you specify, so

so for example, you want to link to your poodletastic post in the music thread .... Poodletastic

and to do that the url code would be

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=72955&st=518

as it is post #519 you want to open from

Thankyou 2 all. anchorman thankyou for the answer to the clutch mystery. It is a different clutch to other cars but if this is the way toyota designed it ,then this is the way it has to be, seems a bit odd having all that free play doing nothing.im getting the side and rear windows tinted tommorow for the sake of the dog in the summer also adds to a bit of security.tow bar will be fitted next week

thanks again for the info

On the landrovers you can buy an entire new cylinder for less than £12 !!!

Maybe you could have saved cash by learning double-declutching and engine speed / gearbox synchros ???

Which brings me to a small point that I'm finding changing from 4th to 5th has become very quick/easy. Just a hint of worry that the gearbox is getting worn. I'll see what its like after I fit a short shift gear stick!!

I have a 1936 Morris 10/4 so a master at double "d" clutch, best way to let the clutch out is open d door.maybe you or Anchor-man can answer this question, vibrating gear stick at exactly sixty.

take the gear nob off and it can be felt coming through the gear stick itself, noise from the plastic sleeve at the top of the gear stick gator, this can be silenced with tape on the gearstick but I still have the vibration.

Also noise from n/s/f drive shaft/wheel, its not a noise you would associate with brakes or wheelbearing/cv joint although its heard more when cornering.

Im really getting disheartened with this car and regretting buying it

fingers crossed its not the gearbox

The vibrating gear knob is nothing new and others have cured it by just fitting a new knob. It doesn't necessarily mean you are heading into DMF territory.

Can you describe the noise a bit more?

Back online late tomorrow!

Thanks for answering so quick, even with the nob off it still vibrates at 60, the n/s/f is like a whine when I accelerate also when in 2nd it sounds like the exhaust is blowing

cheers Gavin

"an answer this question, vibrating gear stick at exactly sixty."

This ones a worry -I'm getting closer to sixty - so is that what happens at that age??? I'm 56 and nothing like that ever happens to me !!

as for the other bits, I'm happy to take a run up to offer opinion/have a laugh. It'll only take me 14 minutes to get there - pm me if you like.

I'm at a loss so maybe the roving reporter can shed some light on it?

If he offers you a ride in the RAV you need size 11 pampers.
