Hi All,

I'm new to this site (and to the brand), great forum. I am looking to get a Yaris for the wife soon. As I am completely new to the brand and the car, thought I'll ask before we buy. Hope you can give me the info to make the right decision. So, here goes:

1. We need an auto yaris - what's the best engine to go for. We dont need performance as the wife doesnt like to go fast(!). Just need a reliable motor to get the shopping done, go to work, get the little one to nursery and back (safely) etc.

2. Petrol or diesel?

3. What is the best vintage :) she's been learning to drive in an 07 yaris, thinks its the bees knees. I looked at an 05 - the interior is totally different - although the price was right :)

4. Anything I need to watch out for? (usual issues etc).

5. My budget is about 4-5K, what willt this get me?

Cheers

Pete

For 4-5K with an auto this eliminates diesel ( current shape diesel yaris is available with MMT but is above your budget. Previous shape diesels are manual only so now petrol is your only alternative).

Also for 4-5 K this eliminates the current shape Yaris which was launched in late 2005.

For auto inthe previous shape Yaris (1999-2005) you have two options

1) A 1.0 engine with 5 speed Multi Mode transmission . This was available after the mid life facelift in 2003 but I fear they will all be above your budget but you might be lucky

2) 1.3 engine that comes with a conventional (torque convertor) 4 speed auto box.Available from launch

Your best bet is to find a previous shape 1.3 auto registered before the facelift in 2003 although you might be lucky and find some facelifted ones in that price bracket.

Anything to watch out for? go to www.honestjohn.co.uk

Hope this helps

to add to the previous post:

We had a similar need to yours with a slight difference - kids have flown the nest! So only the wife was going to use it.

Having looked into it, decided on a 2005 Yaris - on balance offered the best all round options

good Safety : Driver, Passenger and side airbags + pre tensioner seat belts

Automatic : A proper torque converter Auto (not that impressed with MMT or CVT, from past experience). The Auto is well matched to the 1.3 petrol engine.

Brand : Have had a Toyota before - impressive reliability and refinement.

As in previous post, look at Honest John's website for the (mostly ) good and (very few) bad points.

Have had the car for just under a month and so far it has lived up to expectations.

We purchased ours (1.3 T Spirit Auto, 3 door, high miler (58,000 miles) with full Toyota Service History) for just under £4000. I have seen some good 5 door Auto on Autotrader for around £4500 recently.

Hope this helps
