Clutch Judder Post New Dmf & Clutch Installation

Here's my tale of woe.

I have had a new clutch and flywheel fitted, by my local Toyota garage, within the last 2 weeks.

When I collected and drove the car home from the workshop, I noted clutch judder when moving off in 1st gear. This continued to happen, so I spoke to the garage, and went for a test drive with the mechanic who had done the job. I got a lot of stories about complex flywheels, etc. etc. and he advised me to "raise the revs when driving off" or similar.

The truth is I'm not happy with this judder, it gets worse as the car warms up, and it's difficult to hold the car on a hill for example. I've now done 500 plus miles since the repair, and there's no sign of "bedding in" as was also suggested should happen by the mechanic.

Having paid a lot of money for this repair, I'm not at all satisfied with the results.

Can anyone advise how I should proceed please?

In my view, the clutch should work A1 from minute 1. The only bedding in is the clutch material hardening up slightly and bedding to the flywheel surfaces but if thats new as well.....

A judder indicates a fault.,

What the faukt is can be several things I think. In the old days, it indicated oil on the plate.

I think anchorman made mention of this problem in one of the many posts sometime over the last year on DMFs.

The garage will not want to admit a fault as its costly to strip it all apart to rectify.....I guess anchorman will be along soon - I think he's on lates this week

Hi LFH firstly welcome to the club and a lovely part of the UK you come from :thumbsup: I assume your Local Mr T is Corries on Longman Ind est?

In any case if you go to the top of the Rav page theres a whole lot of info on DMFs under technical tips, familiarise yourself with other peoples experiences then go back to your dealer + tell whoever is senior there, that you are not a happy haggis explain your concerns if they then give you the let it develop routine tell them very politely that you are a member of the TOC with 60000 members worldwide and none of those members have experienced clutch judder having had there DMFs re-placed including members who have had to do the work themselves. Did you get a customer satisfaction form thru the post because i am pretty sure you should have. see if that rattles there chain + if not we will get you the number of Toyota customer relations who will hopefully assist you further should you need it. just out of curiosity what age + mileage did this problem occur at? I agree with Stewart. It isn't right and if they will not accept it tell them you want to see the Zone Service Manager from Toyota.

Firstly thanks very much for your very useful replies, kind indeed.

The car is 53 reg, and the rattling noise had been around for a while. I even had them check the exhaust a couple of months ago as it sounded very like a loose heatshield or something. The repair was carried out at 65500 miles.

Now I have some progress to report, I phoned Corrie, and spoke to the service manager, I made him aware of exactly how I felt about the way the car is now performing and that I was aware that it simply shouldn't be the way it is.

So the good news is it goes in next Friday, and this is the really good news: "no matter what" it will be repaired "even if it needs another flywheel, then it will be done". (That comment threw me a bit. Is it likely they have fitted a duff flywheel?)

I'll keep you updated via this thread.

It's either loose, busted, or oily. Either way they must have known about it when they test drove it. Or did they?

I personally don't trust garages they've :censor: too many jobs in the past for my liking including scrapped cylinder heads.

My niece recently took her car to a garage as there was oil in the water.

Mechanic scratched his head and said in all his years he had never seen owt like it and thought it might be the cylinder head. Duly changed the head gasket etc as one would cleaned out the cooling system and told her the car was done. Oh and by the way your block is cracked. What on earth compelled him to rebuild on a cracked block. Hence problem never solved. I ended up putting in a replacement engine for her. The garage still charged her. Wot a plonker. Mind you it was a megane and a cow to work on.

It isn't impossible to have a duff flywheel. It is more likely that they have not done it right or not done something the way it should have been done (for example tightening the bolts in sequence).

Good Evening Gentlemen

An update as promised:

1. Visited the garage, spoke to the mechanic, spoke to the service manager, mentioned the Toyota Owners Club, mentioned the advice I'd been given on this forum.

2. With no further test drive, and no other questions, they have ordered a new flywheeel, and the car goes in to have it fitted on January 5th.

3. I don't think I can ask for better .

I would want a written guarantee that any consequential damage like gearbox or engine if it separates. Hope they get it right this time.

I wish. Its blowing a gale and I need to drive a minibus across to Fife tomorrow!!! Goings ok cos its full of teachers...but coming back is empty!!!

Now I need to know how to attempt to get a full, or partial refund from Toyota GB for the clutch and flywheel.

Are there any specific lines to follow when writing to them, which might increase the chances of success?

I'm confused.

Are they asking you to pay for the new DMF and clutch they have just replaced due to a faulty one. Or are you asking about the cost of the original at 65500 miles. If the latter I doubt you will get anywhere as the car is 5 years old and over the warranty mileage.
