i recently replaced front brake pads on a 2004 toyota avensis d4d t2,with the engine running and car stopped and pressure applied to the brake pedal, the pedal will move towards the floor,if the pedal is pumped once or twice the pedal hardens up again, the brakes work well while driving and with the engine switched off the brake pedal hardens

also if you start the car with your foot on the pedal the pedal will move and continue towards the floor.

anyone any ideas

regards willied

thanks for your input, but when i said the pedal travels towards the floor it actually continues and nearly bottoms out,i know if you start the car with your foot on the pedal normal operation is for the pedal to move downwards about one inch and then hold steady,as i said before when driving the car the brakes operate very well its only happens if the car is idling.if you have any other ideas please submit as all help is appreciated.

It also happens (occasionally) with mine. Generally noticed it when the car is being held on the brake on an incline. The pedal drops an inch or so after being held for around 10 seconds. The braking efficiency other than this is fine.

Did you replace discs at the same time, you may have lip on disc edge, you will have to allow pads to bed in. Strange that this has happened after pad fitment ie: foot straight to floor, you might normally expect this if you had air in system or dodgy master - cylinder, allowing fluid to by-pass seals.

Regards, Beagh.
