Hi,

I've just got a key from e-bay but want to check something before i go and do something stupid.

The good news is the old key is ok but the casing has split so it still works.

The new key is in excellent almost new condition but obviously wrong blade and innards.

what i want to know is can i heat the blade up from both keys to lightly melt the plastic enough to remove and swap the blades over, then add the innards from the old key to the new one.

Thus giving me a new key.

OR is there some kind of embedded chip in the blade itself.

Help, has anyone done this, i want to sort this out as it's the wife's car and she only has the one full key.

Thanks in advance

Hi

The key will have an immobiliser chip in it, if you break this and this is your only key it will cost an awfull lot of money. Melting the key would probably break it!!!!!

I think you should cut your loses and get a key from Toyota or a good locksmith.

Just my 2p worth

oh, well, suspected as much, might aswell just use the cover from the new one and replace the broken cover from the old one, slight differences in design but nothing a gerber can't sort out.

Thanks for the reply
